SUMMARY:Kurt Ribak Trio
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Adler\, saxophone\nScott Foster\, guitar;\nKurt Ribak\, bass \n$20 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10\nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733 \nKurt Rebak’s compositions signify his reach for what happens when “Charles Mingus meets The Meters\, and they go to Duke Ellington’s house to jam\, with Cachao and Thelonious Monk sitting in.” \nKurt has shared the stage with circus performers\, preachers and fire-breathing strippers\, but never all three at once. He’s performed in venues ranging from Yoshi’s to a club where someone stashed a loaded .45 in his bass bag. \nWhen Kurt was about four years old his mother found him dancing to the sound of the dishwasher. More conventional early musical experiences included playing ‘cello and singing in the San Francisco Boys Chorus\, which performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Opera. \nKurt studied at UC Berkeley\, then earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music\, where he graduated with top honors. While at Berklee\, he spent many hours transcribing and absorbing the styles of bassists Paul Chambers\, Ray Brown\, and Charles Mingus\, and gained a love of composition and songwriting.  Early tunes reflect a strong Thelonious Monk influence\, while others reflect his love of the great bassist/composer/bandleader Charles Mingus. Later tunes bring to mind Horace Silver\, Lee Morgan\, and the South African composer Abdullah Ibrahim. \nIn June 2012 Kurt was in an auto accident\, seriously injuring his left hand and forearm.  Thirteen operations later he resumed playing\, much to the surprise of some surgeons. Kurt notes\, “When I was hurt I learned how many people loved me\, cared about me. They say it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a community to heal someone.” In at least one of his tunes\, he cheerfully asserts that he’s not adverse to the restorative qualities of a good cocktail. \nKurt’s recordings are played on KCSM-FM\, KPFA\, KZSC\, KZFR\, KKUP\, San Diego’s Jazz 88\, PRI and other jazz stations. He leads his group at venues throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond\, including sold-out appearances at Yoshi’s and SFJAZZ. His group has also performed at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse\, San Francisco Jazz Festival\, San Jose Jazz Festival\, Nor-Cal Jazz Festival\, Fillmore Street Jazz Festival\, and Blue Note Napa…and Bird & Beckett. \nKurt’s working trio with Lincoln Adler on saxophone and Greg Sankovich on piano dates back to associations made in his San Francisco Boys Chorus days when he and Lincoln were members\, and his subsequent undergraduate years at Berkeley when he and Lincoln encountered Greg. Greg and Lincoln co-produced Kurt’s last three records\, “PAST PRESENT FUTURE”\,”I Got One More!” and “ONWARD“. Greg will miss this Bird & Beckett date while he rehabs from surgery\, but guitarist Scott Foster\, a key figure on the Bird & Beckett roster\, will step in to sub. \n  \nLINCOLN ADLER\, saxophones. Lincoln started playing various musical instruments at the age of 5\, eventually being drawn to the saxophone in high school. Lincoln became fascinated by the power of music to communicate feelings across the boundaries of language and culture. He developed his sound playing in Bay Area bands and refined his abilities at the Uni \nKurt studied at UC Berkeley\, then earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music\, where he graduated with top honors. SUMMARY:Kamal Ahmad: A Program of Morning Ragas
DESCRIPTION:Kamal Ahmad is a sitar player and teacher of raga music. He started his musical journey learning tabla before being initiated in the art of sitar playing by his elder sister. It would not be long before he began to seriously pursue his musical studies under sarod maestro Arnab Chakrabarty. \nSoon after\, Chakrabarty introduced Kamal to his would-be gurus\, sitar virtuoso Vinayak Chittar and scholar-vocalist Pandit Arijit Mahalanabis\, under both of whom Kamal continues to study. In spite of having taken to music at a fairly advanced age\, Kamal compensated for a delayed start with an acutely critical approach to learning\, which allowed him to identify and pursue an efficient path to honing his abilities. As such\, Kamal maintains his critical endeavors in his practice\, performance\, and teaching of music\, in an attempt to constantly improve at each. \n\nRahim Zalal is a tabla player in the Farrukhabad tradition and a disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. Originally from Raleigh\, North Carolina\, he is now based in the Bay Area. He most recently performed a solo recital in Los Angeles. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nRootStock Arts and Bird & Beckett co-present Morning Ragas\, a four-month series of Hindustani and Carnatic Classical Music duo concerts that take place from 9-11 a.m. on the last Sunday of September\, October\, November and December. \n$20 cover charge (cash at the doors\, please); students $10.\nNo reservations required; however\, those with mobility issues should call the bookshop ahead of the date to be accommodated – 415-586-3733.

SUMMARY:All About San Francisco’s Stairways: No Walking Required! w/ Mary Burk & Alexandra Kenin
DESCRIPTION:Take a comfy seat and celebrate the grand finale of SF Stairway Month hearing authors Mary Burk (Stairway Walks in San Francisco) and Alexandra Kenin (Urban Trails series\, San Francisco\, East Bay\, Peninsula and South Bay). And sharpen your wits: We will have special SF stairway trivia game designed by moderator Liz Novoa (aka Instagram’s staircase queen). \nMary and Alex will delight you with stories of SF’s known and hidden stairways\, tell you about the best views\, and share the whereabouts of secret gardens and more. Mary enjoyed a longstanding partnership with Adah Bakalinsky\, co-authoring these now renowned stairway books until Adah’s passing at over 100 years old. Alex is the embodiment of energy. In addition to highlights from her book(s)\, she will share her detailed map of everything that you have wanted to know about SF’s roughly1000 stairways. \nThis event is organized by Glen Park Beautiful (www.gpbeautiful.org). It is the 3rd annual SF Stairway Month\, which was inspired by the creation of Glen Park’s Burnside Tiled Steps. The event is also featured in this inaugural year of Walktober\, a month-long celebration of guided walks in San Francisco hosted by the Crosstown Trail.

SUMMARY:Poet Kim Shuck: A reading
DESCRIPTION:Readings by Kim Shuck from three new books: \nNovember Dance Shirt: a new collection of Kim’s poems written in November 2023. \nAmerican Indian Stories by Zitkala-Ša\, re-release\, with an intro and new essay by Kim. More on Zitkala-Ša here (Wikipedia). \nThis Music: Record of a Poet Becoming\, Janice Gould’s last and posthumous book which Kim helped to edit. This reading will include poems\, prose poems and prose written by Indigenous women from the early 20th century through the present day. This work tracks concerns and conditions for Native women\, including joy and whimsy. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nKim Shuck embraces the fool and jester qualities of being a modern poet and artist. She is a devotee of San Francisco\, whose hills she wanders nearly always on foot. Her maternal grandparents met at the Polish Hall on Shotwell and she spent many hours with her mother and grandmother wandering the Mission St. Miracle Mile\, taking books out of the Mission Branch library and watching aquarium fish on the ground floor of what used to be Hale’s. She firmly believes in carrying a bubble wand\, keys\, pen and notebook and cats cradle string at all times. \nKim\, whose poetry draws on her multiethnic background which includes Polish and Cherokee heritage\, and her experiences as a lifelong resident of San Francisco\, served as San Francisco’s seventh Poet Laureate\, from 2017-2021. In 2019\, she was awarded an inaugural National Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets\, and a PEN Oakland Censorship Award. Among her many books and chapbooks\, Pick a Garnet to Sleep In\, one in a long line of poetry collections\,was published in 2024\, and her book of essays Noodle\, Rant\, Tangent was published in 2022. \nIn her term as Poet Laureate\, she hosted scores of free poetry and art workshops for all ages at neighborhood libraries and schools and worked closely with San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Arts Commission to launch major citywide initiatives to honor Native American Indigenous Peoples’ heritage.
