SUMMARY:Devin Gray Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Darren Johnston\, trumpet; Liberty Ellman\, guitar; Lisa Mezzacappa\, bass; Devin Gray\, drums/compositions \nThe Devin Gray Quartet is an ensemble of forward-thinking improvisers operating at the intersection of modern jazz\, contemporary composition\, and fluid\, exploratory group dynamics. The quartet brings together four distinct voices from the contemporary jazz vanguard. Together\, the quartet delivers a captivating blend of intricate polyrhythms\, rich harmonic interplay\, and spontaneous collective dialogue—delivering music that is as intellectually engaging as it is emotionally vibrant. \nNew York-based guitarist Liberty Ellman is well known for his quarter century collaboration\, since 2001\, in Henry Threadgill’s ensemble Zooid\, and makes a rare San Francisco appearance. Trumpeter Darren Johnston and bassist Lisa Mezzacappa are among the top musicians in the Bay Area avant garde/improvised music ecosystem. \nBerlin/NYC-based\, Devin is a drummer driven by velocity\, imagination and an unshakeable commitment to the unknown. Rooted in jazz but propelled by an expansive curiosity\, Gray moves fluidly between forward-leaning composition\, high-intensity improvisation\, and genre-agnostic experimentation; establishing himself as a vital and unpredictable presence in contemporary creative music. His work with artists such as Kris Davis\, Luke Stewart\, Gerald Cleaver\, Ellery Eskelin\, Michael Formanek\, Dave Liebman\, and Ralph Alessi ranges from precision-built ensembles to volatile\, moment-to-moment collaborations highlighted by a drummer who treats the kit as both engine and instrument of color and microscopic detail. What ultimately sets Gray apart is not just his formidable technique or restless versatility\, but a compositional mind with a bandleader’s vision giving each musical situation its own internal logic. With Gray behind the drums\, expectation is irrelevant–certainty is forward motion. \nGray’s discography as a leader showcases his versatility and commitment to pushing musical‬‭ boundaries. His debut album\, “Dirigo Rataplan” (2012)\, featured notable artists Ellery Eskelin\,‬ ‭Dave Ballou\, and Michael Formanek\, and was praised for its complex and intimate compositions.‬‭ He continued this trajectory with “RelativE ResonancE” (2015)\, collaborating with Chris Speed\,‬‭ Kris Davis\, and Chris Tordini\, further establishing his reputation as a forward-thinking composer.‬ \n‭In 2021\, Gray released “Melt All the Guns” a politically charged trio album featuring trumpeter‬‭ Ralph Alessi and pianist Angelica Sanchez\, addressing the pressing issue of gun violence in the‬ United States. The following year\, he presented “27 Licks\,” a duet with fellow drummer Gerald‬‭ Cleaver\, highlighting his adventurous spirit and deep musical rapport.‬‭ In 2023 Gray released “Most Definitely” as his first solo drum recording showcases his innovative‬‭ approach to percussion\, blending acoustic drumming with electronic elements to create a dynamic‬‭ and immersive listening experience.‬‭ The album’s strength lies in its eloquent orchestration of blended electronics balanced‬‭ with Gray’s high-level improvisational performances pushing‬‭ the boundaries of percussion and improvisation.‬ \n‭Gray’s most recent project\, “Melt All the Guns II” (2024)\, continues his exploration of socially‬‭ conscious themes\, this time featuring Ralph Alessi and French pianist Myslaure Augustin. The‬‭ album comprises tracks like “East Berlin 2024” and “Audre Lorde Straße\, “reflecting his‬‭ engagement with contemporary issues and global perspectives.‬ \n‭Throughout his career\, Gray has maintained a dynamic presence in the international jazz scene\,‬ performing at venues and festivals worldwide including Jazzfest Berlin 2024. His collaborations span a wide range of artists\,‬‭ including Sylvie Courvoisier\, Tim Berne\, Michael Formanek\, Zoh Amba\, and Micah Thomas\, among‬‭ others. As a sideman\, he has contributed to projects with Andrea Parkins\, Satoko Fujii\, Marc‬‭ Ducret\, and Eve Risser\, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to musical innovation.‬‭ Gray’s work is characterized by a relentless pursuit of quality and sincerity\, as well as an exciting‬‭ energy that propels him toward diverse musical directions. His compositions are noted for their‬‭ complexity and engagement\, often described as both brainy and intimate. As he continues to‬‭ evolve as an artist\, Devin Gray remains a compelling force in modern jazz\, sharing his unique‬‭ musical vision with audiences around the world.‬ \n$20 cover charge (cash at the door\, please) / byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733

SUMMARY:Alon Nechustan's Venture Bound Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Matt Renzi and Jesse Levit\, reeds; Alon Nechustan\, piano; Sam Bevan\, bass; Gregg Wyser-Pratte\, drums \nDOWNBEAT writes: “Alon Nechushtan’s Venture Bound is based in New York City. The group has opened for Jazz legend Tony Bennett and played at every major stage in New York City and the U.S including Carnegie Hall\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, The Blue Note Jazz Club\, Kennedy Center\, Merkin Hall\, The Central Park Bandshell\, Brooklyn Bandshell\, showcasing ‘compelling chemistry in abundance’.” \nJAZZ TIMES writes: “The single most salient fact about current jazz is its ongoing globalization. Jazz is an open-ended\, self-renewing art form that draws strength from sources far outside itself. Example: Venture Bound. It is hardcore\, up-to-the-minute small-ensemble jazz with a unique sonic signature. Alon Nechushtan was born in Tel Aviv. On “The Gratitude Suite\,” the formal chiming of his piano introduction is overtaken by wheeling klezmer rhythms when the band kicks in. On “Dark Damsel\,” Brahim Brigbane’s fidgeting oud\, old and exotic and Middle Eastern\, creates sinuous counterpoint with Nechushtan’s freeform 21st-century piano. “Pome(grenades)” starts as a headlong thrust\, but then it careens back on itself\, like a Balkan circle dance.” \nVenture Bound’s touring schedule includes frequent appearances in the Red Hook Jazz Festival\, Chicago World Music Days\, Los Angeles\, San Francisco and Baltimore\, along with the once-prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in its true golden era\, which commissioned Alon Nechustan and his group to perform a special tribute to Billy Strayhorn on Strayhorn’s 100th birthday. This September\, Alon has booked a run of key Bay Area jazz venues that concludes with their Bird & Beckett appearance. \n$25 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733 \nCheck out Venture Bound’s last Bird & Beckett show\, in February of this year:

SUMMARY:Duo Changüísonico: José Andrés + Kai Lyons & friends
DESCRIPTION:José Andrés\, “El Sinsonte” + Kai Lyons return to Bird & Beckett for the third time! \nTonight\, guests Cy Thompson\, marimbula\, Ricky Aguilar\, bongos\, and Myron Cohen\, drumset\, drop in to give José Andrés a proper send off. \nBird & Beckett is proud to present José Andrés “El Sinsonte” Rodríguez Ramírez of Guantánamo\, Cuba — “The Mockinbird” — renowned gran maestro reginero\, freestyle poet/lyricist of the Latin Grammy-nominated Grupo Changüí de Guantánamo\, the most widely traveled and successful changüí group today. El Sinsonte\, now living in retirement in Tampa\, Florida\, has returned to the Bay Area for a series of engagements with San Francisco’s own Kai Lyons\, guitarist\, tres cubano player and musicologist extraordinaire\, concluding with their Bird & Beckett duo encounter. \nKai\, ubiquitous performer and respected educator on the Bay Area jazz scene\, travels extensively to learn from the musical traditions of cultures beyond the borders of the U.S.\, particularly to various African countries as well as Mexico\, the Caribbean\, and Central and South America. In 2023\, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, Kai encountered José Andrés\, recently retired from Changüí de Guantánamo and living in Tampa\, Florida. Kai has often visited Cuba\, and since his encounter with José Andrés\, his primary destination there has been the city of Guantánamo\, capital of the southeastern province of Guantánamo\, in pursuit of deeper knowledge and understanding of changüí. \nHistorically the foremost practitioner of its genre\, Grupo Changüí de Guantánamo was formed in 1945 by the Veranes brothers — renowned tres player Latamblé “Chito” Veranes\, and bonguero Arturo Veranes. Born in 1916 in Guantánamo’s Loma del Chivo neighborhood\, Latamblé rose to prominence as a musician through a succession of groups beginning in 1934 with Los Jóvenes del Guaso\, a combo he formed with his brother. From there\, Latamblé moved through Rafael Inciarte Brioso’s Orquesta Cristal; an ensemble led by Conchita Bravo; and Los Champions de Lilí Martínez\, which became Los Siete Amigos after leader Martínez herself moved on. Latamblé then joined La Trova Tradicional de Guantánamo and subsequently Orquesta Siboney\, before Martínez recruited him for La Rareza del 43. Latamblé was influential in pianist Martínez’s incorporation of the nengón and changüí into contemporary son piano playing\, and in 1945\, Rafael Inciarte requested that Latamblé and his brother form an ensemble devoted entirely to the changüí. The resulting band was Grupo Changüí de Guantánamo\, which was led by José Andrés\, El Sinsonte\, from 1981 until his retirement a few years ago. The ensemble continues as the most widely traveled and successful changüí group today. \nTonight will be an unrivaled opportunity to encounter El Sinsonte in an intimate setting with his great friend and colleague\, Kai Lyons for a night of boleros\, son\, improv\, call-and-response\, humor\, stories and changüí. Get a taste of what El Sinsonte can do these days “in retirement\,” in Tampa and wherever he roams: Vamos Pal Monte \n$20 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733 \n\n  \nRead Andy Gilbert’s Mission Local piece on El Sinsonte and his current Bay Area tour with Kai at this link: bringing-guantanamo-soul-this-week-to-the-bay-area
