SUMMARY:In a Silent Way: Joel Harrison Quintet plays Miles Davis
DESCRIPTION:Paul Hanson\, reeds; Joel Harrison\, guitar; Michael Manring\, bass; Scott Amendola\, drums \nFormer Berkeley resident\, guitarist Joel Harrison\, returns to the Bay Area to journey into Miles Davis’ iconic 1970 record\, “In a Silent Way.” The band consists of old allies\, some of the Bay Area’s finest and most creative musicians—they will also perform some of Harrison’s original music. Harrison recently released a live record from the Big Ears Festival of this music. The band’s approach will be to “make it new.” \nGuitarist\, composer\, arranger\, lyricist\, writer\, educator and vocalist Joel Harrison has “created a new blueprint for jazz” (New Orleans Times-Picayune). He has released 27 records\, a body of work that connects multiple American traditions. While rooted in jazz\, his music moves fluidly through classical\, rock\, country\, and American roots music. The New York Times has described his work as “protean… brilliant.” \nHarrison is the founder and director of the Alternative Guitar Summit\, an annual festival devoted to innovative and unconventional guitar music. The Summit has featured artists such as Fred Frith\, Nels Cline\, Bill Frisell\, Julian Lage\, Michael Gregory Jackson\, Mary Halvorson and Pat Metheny\, who has called it “one of the most interesting and distinguished forums for guitar on the planet.” Harrison is the author of Guitar Talk: Conversations with Visionary Players\, Pity the Genius and Modern Jazz Standards for Guitar. \nhttps://joelharrison.com/\nhttps://www.paulhansonmusic.com/\nhttps://manthing.com/\nhttps://scottamendola.com/ \n$25 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733

Mainstays of the Bay Area Americana scene\, and the Bird & Beckett bandstand\, for nearly a decade\, Nashville Honeymoon has traversed country\, rockabilly\, bluegrass\, and pop across four albums\, writing songs that uplift the tangled mess of day-to-day life and investigate universal themes of love and loss – often at the same time. SUMMARY:Ella Dair Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Ella Dair is a NYC-based jazz vocalist. Originally from San Francisco\, she started singing at a young age\, performing with many Bay Area legends in her aunt’s swing band “Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers.” \nElla continued her education in music and performance with SFArtsEd\, falling in love with the songs of Harold Arlen and Kander & Ebb\, among other classics of the Great American Songbook. As a teenager she was a vocal soloist with the youth choir at Glide Memorial\, the renowned non-denominational church presided over by civil rights leader Cecil Williams. \nElla earned her bachelor’s degree from Bard College\, studying anthropology and Latin American studies with a particular interest in ethnomusicology. Her studies broadened her musical tastes and sent her to Mexico City\, where she lived post-grad. Ella then moved to New York City\, joining the staff at Dizzy’s Club at Jazz At Lincoln Center\, where she has been exposed to many of the greatest jazz musicians in the world. \nOn her regular trips to the West Coast Ella performs at The Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in San Francisco\, an iconic institution that has received rave reviews from the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. At the Royal Cuckoo\, Ella has sung with Etta James’ trumpet player Mike Olmos\, Lyle Lovett’s alto player Brad Leali\, and tenor saxophonist Howard Wiley\, a resident Artistic Director at the SFJAZZ Center. \nElla covers a range of material\, including jazz standards\, soul\, country and folk tunes. She has a keen eye for unique and beautiful songs\, and she continues to work tirelessly on expanding her repertoire\, always on the lookout for obscure gems in addition to timeless classics.
