SUMMARY:Mike Greensill Trio
DESCRIPTION:At Bird & Beckett on Friday\, November 6th\, pianist Mike Greensill is joined in a trio by Brad Buethe on guitar and Carla Kaufman on bass\, extending the celebration of his 81st year on the planet! \nSometimes what you want to hear is a great instrumental trio\, though Mike has long been known and lauded as a superb accompanist for vocalists. That reputation is well earned and hardly a surprise\, given his nearly four-decades-long run in tandem with vocalist Wesla Whitfield. That’s Wesla at right in the photo above\, along with just a few of their many\, many friends in the business — pianist Larry Dunlap and vocalists Bobbe Norris\, Madeline Eastman and Denise Perrier\, with drummer Vince Lateano sauntering by bemused in the background. \n \nIn the photo at right — Mike flanked by fellow pianists Dick Hindman and Dave McKenna — that’s one of the many teddy bears made by Wesla for Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS. \nMike and Wesla began working together in 1980\, married in 1986 and made twenty albums together in the years leading up to Wesla’s passing in 2018 — beginning with “Just for a Thrill\,” featuring saxophonist Al Cohn\, with Mike playing piano\, arranging and producing; Paul Breslin on bass; and Vince Lateano on drums. \nMike and Wesla traveled the world with their music\, celebrating the Great American Songbook with unforgettable and sparkling devotion. Mike was the pianist on Sedge Thompson’s KQED West Coast Live radio show for more than a decade until the show went off the air in 2018. Since 2020\, he’s been livestreaming “jazz in the afternoon” on Facebook from his home every Thursday at 3pm. For years\, he’s celebrated his birthday with an annual concert on Labor Day at Old First Church in San Francisco. And he’s played in every saloon of note in Northern California since he arrived from England via Hong Kong in 1977 at the ripe old age of 31. \nAlong the way\, in his accompanist/arranger/producer role\, he’s lent his elegant and witty support to superb singers from Madeline Eastman and Denise Perrier to Rita Moreno and Margaret Whiting\, and most lately his newest partner\, Gale Terminello. \nMike needs no vocalist to set off what he does at the piano\, though it certainly brings out the best in him. \nHe’s an elegant\, spirited and witty pianist & raconteur you’d do well not to miss. \n  \nMike with Orrin Keepnews\, photo by Rick Walsh \n“Greensill is an accompanist in the great tradition of Jimmy Rowles and Ellis Larkins. It’s worth twice the price of admission just to hear him!”\nTerry Teachout – NY Daily News \nThe San Francisco Chronicle’s Jesse Hamlin calls Greensill\,\n“The perfect accompanist.” \nPhillip Elwood\, jazz writer for the San Francisco Examiner states\,\n“Greensill is a wonderful jazz pianist.” \n  \n$20 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733 \nMike at Stars with lyricist Sammy Cahn

SUMMARY:Scott Foster Meets the Masters... Buethe/Wiitala/Lateano
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Scott Foster performs with an ever-evolving cast of collaborators on the 3rd Friday of every month at Bird & Beckett. Lately\, he’s been focused on bringing to our bandstand some of the great jazz players who have contributed so much to the depth and beauty of the San Francisco jazz landscape over the past seven decades. Tonight\, Scott has invited guitarist Brad Buethe\, bassist John Wiitala and drummer Vince Lateano to join him in two sets of music. \nFor 24 years and counting now\, Scott has been a consistent and wonderful presence at Bird & Beckett. In late 2002\, veteran tenor sax player Chuck Peterson invited Scott to join Chuck’s weekly “Jazz in the Bookshop” gig in a combo that featured three jazz veterans — saxophonist/arranger Bill Perkins\, bassist Don Prell and drummer Jimmy Ryan. At the time\, Scott was still in his early twenties and had only recently returned to the Bay Area\, fresh out of Berklee College of Music in Boston. He’s been on our stage virtually every month since 2002\, and has led his own date here each month for the past dozen years. \nVince Lateano\, a Sacramento kid\, got his start on the local scene in his early twenties under the mentorship of the late drummer John Markham\, when Vince rousted out of the Army in the mid-1960s\, playing all the jazz clubs of the era\, touring\, leading the house band at Jazz at Pearl’s\, leading notorious jam sessions at Pier 23\, the Dogpatch Saloon\, the Seven Mile\, Sweeties\, Bird & Beckett… never pausing\, always happy to play close to home\, always swingin’. \nBrad Buethe came out of UC Berkeley in the late 1970s\, backing major artists including Joe Williams\, Jon Hendricks and John Handy in Bill Bell’s big band\, playing in David Hardiman’s San Francisco All-Stars Big Band in the chair most frequently associated with guitarist Calvin Keys\, and working in the Mark Levine Quintet\, before setting out for New York in 1982 where he played with Jack McDuff\, Jacky Byard and Barry Harris and led his own quintet with Joe Lovano and Mike Clark. Brad returned to San Francisco in 1989\, and the rest\, as they say\, is (more) history. One of the greats. \nJohn Wiitala cut his teeth in the late 1980s and early ’90s\, a fixture at Keystone Korner\, playing with Joe Henderson\, Junior Cook\, Charlie Rouse\, James Moody\, Bud Shank\, Cecil Payne and Jessica Williams\, touring with Williams as well as Richie Cole\, Arturo Sandoval and Shorty Rogers\, and appearing at jazz festivals including Monterey\, North Sea\, Montreux\, Detroit\, JVC/Concord. \nBird & Beckett is proud to have presented all four of these giants of Bay Area jazz countless times in the past twenty seven years (Vince was the drummer in the first jazz trio date at Bird & Beckett\, back in 1999\, in a combo put together by bassist John Clark with Lee Bloom on piano; Vince’s current trio with bassist Peter Barshay and pianist Ben Stolorow plays here on the third Sunday of every other month and conducts a monthly jam session here as well). \nWe’re more than pleased to hear these four musicians together tonight. \n$20 cover charge; byob.\nStudents $10. Kids free. \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733.

SUMMARY:Dima + Four
DESCRIPTION:Dima\, vocals\nDavid Udolph\, piano\nChris Amberger\, bass\nAkira Tana\, drums \nSinging from the heart with a voice and style reminiscent of the early 50’s\, Dima was influenced at an early age by the music that surrounded her as a child: the classic sounds of jazz. \nShe began to develop her style as a jazz singer while studying with Merrill Hoover\, a well known jazz pianist best known for his eloquent accompaniment of vocalists such as Ernestine Anderson\, Anita O’Day\, and Mary Stallings. This rare opportunity set the foundation for her to establish her own unique approach to singing as she fell in love with the jazz standard. \nKnown for her command of the lyric\, beautiful soothing tone\, soulful improvisation\, and carefully chosen repertoire\, Dima keeps alive the true art of the jazz singer. She’s backed on this date by the best in the business\, attesting to the respect she merits for her art.

SUMMARY:Ella Dair Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Ella Dair is a NYC-based jazz vocalist. Originally from San Francisco\, she started singing at a young age\, performing with many Bay Area legends in her aunt’s swing band “Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers.” \nElla continued her education in music and performance with SFArtsEd\, falling in love with the songs of Harold Arlen and Kander & Ebb\, among other classics of the Great American Songbook. As a teenager she was a vocal soloist with the youth choir at Glide Memorial\, the renowned non-denominational church presided over by civil rights leader Cecil Williams. \nElla earned her bachelor’s degree from Bard College\, studying anthropology and Latin American studies with a particular interest in ethnomusicology. Her studies broadened her musical tastes and sent her to Mexico City\, where she lived post-grad. Ella then moved to New York City\, joining the staff at Dizzy’s Club at Jazz At Lincoln Center\, where she has been exposed to many of the greatest jazz musicians in the world. \nOn her regular trips to the West Coast Ella performs at The Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in San Francisco\, an iconic institution that has received rave reviews from the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. At the Royal Cuckoo\, Ella has sung with Etta James’ trumpet player Mike Olmos\, Lyle Lovett’s alto player Brad Leali\, and tenor saxophonist Howard Wiley\, a resident Artistic Director at the SFJAZZ Center. \nElla covers a range of material\, including jazz standards\, soul\, country and folk tunes. She has a keen eye for unique and beautiful songs\, and she continues to work tirelessly on expanding her repertoire\, always on the lookout for obscure gems in addition to timeless classics.
