SUMMARY:Kamal Ahmad: A Program of Morning Ragas
DESCRIPTION:Kamal Ahmad is a sitar player and teacher of raga music. He started his musical journey learning tabla before being initiated in the art of sitar playing by his elder sister. It would not be long before he began to seriously pursue his musical studies under sarod maestro Arnab Chakrabarty. \nSoon after\, Chakrabarty introduced Kamal to his would-be gurus\, sitar virtuoso Vinayak Chittar and scholar-vocalist Pandit Arijit Mahalanabis\, under both of whom Kamal continues to study. In spite of having taken to music at a fairly advanced age\, Kamal compensated for a delayed start with an acutely critical approach to learning\, which allowed him to identify and pursue an efficient path to honing his abilities. As such\, Kamal maintains his critical endeavors in his practice\, performance\, and teaching of music\, in an attempt to constantly improve at each. \n\nRahim Zalal is a tabla player in the Farrukhabad tradition and a disciple of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. Originally from Raleigh\, North Carolina\, he is now based in the Bay Area. He most recently performed a solo recital in Los Angeles. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nRootStock Arts and Bird & Beckett co-present Morning Ragas\, a four-month series of Hindustani and Carnatic Classical Music duo concerts that take place from 9-11 a.m. on the last Sunday of September\, October\, November and December. \n$20 cover charge (cash at the doors\, please); students $10.\nNo reservations required; however\, those with mobility issues should call the bookshop ahead of the date to be accommodated – 415-586-3733.

SUMMARY:Kurt Ribak Trio
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Adler\, saxophone\nScott Foster\, guitar;\nKurt Ribak\, bass \n$20 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10\nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733 \nKurt Rebak’s compositions signify his reach for what happens when “Charles Mingus meets The Meters\, and they go to Duke Ellington’s house to jam\, with Cachao and Thelonious Monk sitting in.” \nKurt has shared the stage with circus performers\, preachers and fire-breathing strippers\, but never all three at once. He’s performed in venues ranging from Yoshi’s to a club where someone stashed a loaded .45 in his bass bag. \nWhen Kurt was about four years old his mother found him dancing to the sound of the dishwasher. More conventional early musical experiences included playing ‘cello and singing in the San Francisco Boys Chorus\, which performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Opera. \nKurt studied at UC Berkeley\, then earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music\, where he graduated with top honors. While at Berklee\, he spent many hours transcribing and absorbing the styles of bassists Paul Chambers\, Ray Brown\, and Charles Mingus\, and gained a love of composition and songwriting.  Early tunes reflect a strong Thelonious Monk influence\, while others reflect his love of the great bassist/composer/bandleader Charles Mingus. Later tunes bring to mind Horace Silver\, Lee Morgan\, and the South African composer Abdullah Ibrahim. \nIn June 2012 Kurt was in an auto accident\, seriously injuring his left hand and forearm.  Thirteen operations later he resumed playing\, much to the surprise of some surgeons. Kurt notes\, “When I was hurt I learned how many people loved me\, cared about me. They say it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a community to heal someone.” In at least one of his tunes\, he cheerfully asserts that he’s not adverse to the restorative qualities of a good cocktail. \nKurt’s recordings are played on KCSM-FM\, KPFA\, KZSC\, KZFR\, KKUP\, San Diego’s Jazz 88\, PRI and other jazz stations. He leads his group at venues throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond\, including sold-out appearances at Yoshi’s and SFJAZZ. His group has also performed at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse\, San Francisco Jazz Festival\, San Jose Jazz Festival\, Nor-Cal Jazz Festival\, Fillmore Street Jazz Festival\, and Blue Note Napa…and Bird & Beckett. \nKurt’s working trio with Lincoln Adler on saxophone and Greg Sankovich on piano dates back to associations made in his San Francisco Boys Chorus days when he and Lincoln were members\, and his subsequent undergraduate years at Berkeley when he and Lincoln encountered Greg. Greg and Lincoln co-produced Kurt’s last three records\, “PAST PRESENT FUTURE”\,”I Got One More!” and “ONWARD“. Greg will miss this Bird & Beckett date while he rehabs from surgery\, but guitarist Scott Foster\, a key figure on the Bird & Beckett roster\, will step in to sub. \n  \nLINCOLN ADLER\, saxophones. Lincoln started playing various musical instruments at the age of 5\, eventually being drawn to the saxophone in high school. Lincoln became fascinated by the power of music to communicate feelings across the boundaries of language and culture. He developed his sound playing in Bay Area bands and refined his abilities at the Uni \nKurt studied at UC Berkeley\, then earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music\, where he graduated with top honors. SUMMARY:Walker Talks\, on Attar of Nishapur - a live stream
DESCRIPTION:Attar of Nishapur\, the 12th century Sufi poet\, composed his poetry while working as an herbalist and perfume-maker\, making medicines and potions as well as poems\, in the city of Nishapur.  This was in the land once known as Khorasan\, at the time of the Seljuk dynasty of ancient Persia\, now Iran. \nAttar’s classic poem “The Conference of the Birds” is a vast allegory of each soul’s individual pilgrimage toward the One\, told as an adventurous journey undertaken by a community of birds.  This work\, as well as many others\, helps us to understand what Rumi must have meant when he said\, “Attar travelled all the way through the seven cities of love\, while I have only just arrived at the bend of the first alley.” \nAn almost-monthly series of talks by Walker Brents III (9 or 10 talks a year for more than two decades) on various topics in poetry\, mythology\, folklore\, philosophy\, etc. Although primarily a live stream viewable on our YouTube channel and Facebook page\, it’s also fine if you slip into the darkened shop to listen in person. \nYou can find the live stream at this link: https://www.youtube.com/@bird_beckett/streams

SUMMARY:Jonah Raskin\, Marc Zegans\, Larry Beckett read some of their poetry\, and Jonah introduces his latest book
DESCRIPTION:Jonah Raskin introduces his most recent book of cultural writings\, Keeping the Beat (Regent Press\, 2026)\, a collection of original\, groundbreaking reviews and essays about the writers of the Beat Generation\, plus their contemporaries and fellow travelers. Jonah’s five and a half decades’ output of short and long-form literary/cultural criticism and journalism has traced three-quarters of a century of outsider American socio-political life\, with an eye on the American imperial project that frames it. Lately\, he’s also produced a fair amount of poetry. \nJonah will bring some of his poems to the table to join with poets Marc Zegans and Larry Beckett\, who will present some of their own poetry\, principally recent work. Larry will also sing a poem of Paul Verlaine\, in his own translation\, accompanying the poem/song on piano. \nThe Book of Immaculate Perception / Madrigals is a tête-bêche (flip book) by Marc Zegans and Larry Beckett in which two poem cycles\, “Madrigals” by Beckett and “The Book of Immaculate Perception” by Zegans can be read from their respective fronts-to-backs in a single spine format. The project developed when Marc sent Larry the manuscript for “The Book of Immaculate Perception\,” a micro-chap tracing the circle from raw awareness through life mediated by language to simple awareness regained\, and Larry\, responding enthusiastically\, shared with Marc a thematically resonant series of madrigals inspired by his daughter that trace the life arc forward from conception. The confluence between these poem-cycles extends beyond shared narrative lines to independently formed yet common imagery and complementary methods of composition. In each body of work\, you will find compactness of speech\, form that liberates line\, and an easy flow from poem-to-poem that animates and enriches the experience of reading these two sets of poems in each other’s company. \nLarry Beckett’s poetry ranges from songs to blank sonnets and 100-page narrative works. His lyric\, “Song to the Siren\,” is a modern standard. In the years since\, he’s written the postmodern epic\, “American Cycle\,” including the long narratives Paul Bunyan\, Wyatt Earp\, Amelia Earhart\, and he has reinvented Sonnets. “The Book of Merlin” is a recovery and translation of the 6th-century Brythonic poet\, and “Romances Without Words / In Solitary” is the first translation of the prison manuscript of Paul Verlaine. “Beat Poetry” is a study of the poets and poetry of the fifties San Francisco Renaissance. These madrigals are to a child from conception on. They’re dedicated to his daughter\, Susannah Beckett. \nMarc Zegans’s seven collections of poems include Lyon Street (Bamboo Dart Press\, 2022) and The Snow Dead (Červená Barva Press\, 2020). Ghost Book (Kite String Press\, 2024)\, a fine art photo book collaboration with photographer Tsar Fedorsky\, is held in the special collections of the Boston Athenaeum\, the Getty Research Institute\, Yale University’s Haas Family Arts Library\, Haverford College\, the Peabody Essex Museum\, and others.  Marc reviews poetry for Liberated Words in his column\, “On the Cutting Edge.” Films based on Marc’s poems appear regularly at festivals around the world. He lives by the coast in Northern California.

SUMMARY:Gil Duran (The Nerd Reich) & Amy Westervelt (Brought to You By)
DESCRIPTION:Gil Duran\, author of The Nerd Reich: Silicon Valley Fascism and the War on Democracy; and Amy Westervelt\, author or Brought to You By: How Corporations Warped the Truth\, Conned the Public\, and Broke Democracy\, in conversation. \nGil Durán was born in Tulare\, California\, in 1976. The grandson of Mexican immigrant farmworkers\, he got his first taste of work in the fields\, but took an interest in journalism after winning the local newspaper’s “My Mom Is the Best” contest in the fifth grade. In the tenth grade\, his family moved from California to Kentucky\, where he dropped out of high school for a year\, then returned and befriended an English teacher who encouraged him to apply to college. He graduated DePauw University in 1998 and started his journalism career at the San Jose Mercury News. As the newspaper industry hit turbulence\, he pivoted to politics and spent ten years as an advisor to politicians including Jerry Brown\, Dianne Feinstein\, and Kamala Harris. In 2018\, he returned to journalism as California opinion editor of The Sacramento Bee\, and then became editorial page editor of the San Francisco Examiner. Now an independent journalist\, he publishes two newsletters: The Nerd Reich\, focused on extremist tech politics\, and FrameLab\, focused on political language. \nA fearless and urgent chronicle of the tech-authoritarian movement from its early days in San Francisco politics to its current moment on the international stage\, exploring the wild and dystopian ambition of the technocrats at its center\, and offering a road map to resistance. \nWhen Silicon Valley says it is ‘‘moving fast and breaking things\,’’ the world interprets the chaos as a necessary cost of innovation. Gil Durán reveals something far more sinister: a decades-long campaign to replace elected governments with corporate rule. \nDrawing on insider political experience and new investigations\, Durán traces this ideology from its philosophical roots in The Sovereign Individual by James Dale Davidson and Lord William Rees-Mogg. He introduces its modern apostles—Peter Thiel\, Marc Andreessen\, Balaji Srinivasan\, and Elon Musk—and shows how the promise of technological liberation has transformed into a global movement for digital feudalism\, powered by cryptocurrency\, artificial intelligence\, and the algorithmic propaganda of social media. \nThe Nerd Reich explains the origins\, strategies\, and ambitions of Silicon Valley’s war on democracy for the first time. From San Francisco’s weaponized elections and secret billionaire projects to the White House\, Durán exposes how the world’s richest men are building a new political order. The Nerd Reich is more than a hidden history\, it’s an urgent warning: democracy is being dismantled not by coups or tanks\, but by code\, capital\, and the illusion of innovation. Durán insists there is still time to fight back—if we act now. \nAmy Westervelt is an award-winning investigative print and audio journalist. In 2015\, she received a Rachel Carson award for women greening journalism for her role in creating a women-only climate journalism group syndicating longform climate reporting to The Atlantic\, The Guardian\, The Economist\, and many more outlets. In 2017\, she founded the independent podcast production company Critical Frequency\, which specializes in reported narrative podcasts that The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, and The Atlantic have described as “fascinating\,” “rigorously reported\,” and “the best.” Westervelt has received an ONA award for excellence in audio storytelling\, multiple Covering Climate Now awards for climate reporting\, a Wilbur award for excellence in religion reporting\, two Peabody nominations\, and was named a 2023 Covering Climate Now “Journalist of the Year.” A 20-year veteran investigative journalist\, Westervelt’s earlier work for NPR\, The Guardian\, The Wall Street Journal\, Inside Climate News\, and various other outlets earned her Edward R. Murrow\, ONA\, and Folio awards as well\, and is often cited as amongst the earliest examples of accountability reporting on climate. Her book “Brought to You By: Inside Big Oil’s Total Information War\,” is just out from Bloomsbury. \n \nA gripping account of the corporate propaganda that has invaded our media\, our democracy\, and now the very nature of truth itself-from investigative reporter and Drilled podcast host Amy Westervelt. \nWhether it’s the tobacco industry lying about the health dangers of cigarettes\, Big Pharma burying studies that make its products less marketable\, or Big Oil misleading the public on the dangers of the climate crisis\, we all know corporations use doubt and science denial to avoid responsibility. So why do we continue to let them get away with it? \nIn Brought to You By\, Amy Westervelt exposes the plot hidden within the familiar story of science denial. Over the last century\, Big Industry has built a vast apparatus of think tanks\, lobbyists\, sponsored university labs\, and obliging news networks to con the public and fool decision-makers\, poisoning the informational ecosystem and warping the nature of truth along the way. \nWith her signature wit and incisiveness\, Westervelt shows how the masterminds of corporate misinformation-people like Herb Schmertz\, the public relations pioneer who made Mobil “the thinking man’s oil company\,” Richard Edelman\, the PR guy who helped the dairy industry vilify oat milk\, and David Petraeus\, the disgraced spy chief using counter- insurgency tactics to discredit climate science\, have ushered in an era of unprecedented corporate control. \nOnly by exposing this well-oiled machine can we begin to repair the social contract; reclaim truth and democracy; and redraw the lines between corporate speech and individual speech\, a lie and an opinion\, a dollar and a word.

DESCRIPTION:Darren Johnston\, trumpet; Liberty Ellman\, guitar; Lisa Mezzacappa\, bass; Devin Gray\, drums/compositions \nThe Devin Gray Quartet is an ensemble of forward-thinking improvisers operating at the intersection of modern jazz\, contemporary composition\, and fluid\, exploratory group dynamics. The quartet brings together four distinct voices from the contemporary jazz vanguard. Together\, the quartet delivers a captivating blend of intricate polyrhythms\, rich harmonic interplay\, and spontaneous collective dialogue—delivering music that is as intellectually engaging as it is emotionally vibrant. \nNew York-based guitarist Liberty Ellman is well known for his quarter century collaboration\, since 2001\, in Henry Threadgill’s ensemble Zooid\, and makes a rare San Francisco appearance. Trumpeter Darren Johnston and bassist Lisa Mezzacappa are among the top musicians in the Bay Area avant garde/improvised music ecosystem. \nBerlin/NYC-based\, Devin is a drummer driven by velocity\, imagination and an unshakeable commitment to the unknown. Rooted in jazz but propelled by an expansive curiosity\, Gray moves fluidly between forward-leaning composition\, high-intensity improvisation\, and genre-agnostic experimentation; establishing himself as a vital and unpredictable presence in contemporary creative music. His work with artists such as Kris Davis\, Luke Stewart\, Gerald Cleaver\, Ellery Eskelin\, Michael Formanek\, Dave Liebman\, and Ralph Alessi ranges from precision-built ensembles to volatile\, moment-to-moment collaborations highlighted by a drummer who treats the kit as both engine and instrument of color and microscopic detail. What ultimately sets Gray apart is not just his formidable technique or restless versatility\, but a compositional mind with a bandleader’s vision giving each musical situation its own internal logic. With Gray behind the drums\, expectation is irrelevant–certainty is forward motion. \nGray’s discography as a leader showcases his versatility and commitment to pushing musical‬‭ boundaries. His debut album\, “Dirigo Rataplan” (2012)\, featured notable artists Ellery Eskelin\,‬ ‭Dave Ballou\, and Michael Formanek\, and was praised for its complex and intimate compositions.‬‭ He continued this trajectory with “RelativE ResonancE” (2015)\, collaborating with Chris Speed\,‬‭ Kris Davis\, and Chris Tordini\, further establishing his reputation as a forward-thinking composer.‬ \n‭In 2021\, Gray released “Melt All the Guns” a politically charged trio album featuring trumpeter‬‭ Ralph Alessi and pianist Angelica Sanchez\, addressing the pressing issue of gun violence in the‬ United States. The following year\, he presented “27 Licks\,” a duet with fellow drummer Gerald‬‭ Cleaver\, highlighting his adventurous spirit and deep musical rapport.‬‭ In 2023 Gray released “Most Definitely” as his first solo drum recording showcases his innovative‬‭ approach to percussion\, blending acoustic drumming with electronic elements to create a dynamic‬‭ and immersive listening experience.‬‭ The album’s strength lies in its eloquent orchestration of blended electronics balanced‬‭ with Gray’s high-level improvisational performances pushing‬‭ the boundaries of percussion and improvisation.‬ \n‭Gray’s most recent project\, “Melt All the Guns II” (2024)\, continues his exploration of socially‬‭ conscious themes\, this time featuring Ralph Alessi and French pianist Myslaure Augustin. The‬‭ album comprises tracks like “East Berlin 2024” and “Audre Lorde Straße\, “reflecting his‬‭ engagement with contemporary issues and global perspectives.‬ \n‭Throughout his career\, Gray has maintained a dynamic presence in the international jazz scene\,‬ performing at venues and festivals worldwide including Jazzfest Berlin 2024. His collaborations span a wide range of artists\,‬‭ including Sylvie Courvoisier\, Tim Berne\, Michael Formanek\, Zoh Amba\, and Micah Thomas\, among‬‭ others. As a sideman\, he has contributed to projects with Andrea Parkins\, Satoko Fujii\, Marc‬‭ Ducret\, and Eve Risser\, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to musical innovation.‬‭ Gray’s work is characterized by a relentless pursuit of quality and sincerity\, as well as an exciting‬‭ energy that propels him toward diverse musical directions. His compositions are noted for their‬‭ complexity and engagement\, often described as both brainy and intimate. As he continues to‬‭ evolve as an artist\, Devin Gray remains a compelling force in modern jazz\, sharing his unique‬‭ musical vision with audiences around the world.‬ \n$20 cover charge (cash at the door\, please) / byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733
