SUMMARY:Poet Kim Shuck: A reading
DESCRIPTION:Readings by Kim Shuck from three new books: \nNovember Dance Shirt: a new collection of Kim’s poems written in November 2023. \nAmerican Indian Stories by Zitkala-Ša\, re-release\, with an intro and new essay by Kim. More on Zitkala-Ša here (Wikipedia). \nThis Music: Record of a Poet Becoming\, Janice Gould’s last and posthumous book which Kim helped to edit. This reading will include poems\, prose poems and prose written by Indigenous women from the early 20th century through the present day. This work tracks concerns and conditions for Native women\, including joy and whimsy. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nKim Shuck embraces the fool and jester qualities of being a modern poet and artist. She is a devotee of San Francisco\, whose hills she wanders nearly always on foot. Her maternal grandparents met at the Polish Hall on Shotwell and she spent many hours with her mother and grandmother wandering the Mission St. Miracle Mile\, taking books out of the Mission Branch library and watching aquarium fish on the ground floor of what used to be Hale’s. She firmly believes in carrying a bubble wand\, keys\, pen and notebook and cats cradle string at all times. \nKim\, whose poetry draws on her multiethnic background which includes Polish and Cherokee heritage\, and her experiences as a lifelong resident of San Francisco\, served as San Francisco’s seventh Poet Laureate\, from 2017-2021. In 2019\, she was awarded an inaugural National Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets\, and a PEN Oakland Censorship Award. Among her many books and chapbooks\, Pick a Garnet to Sleep In\, one in a long line of poetry collections\,was published in 2024\, and her book of essays Noodle\, Rant\, Tangent was published in 2022. \nIn her term as Poet Laureate\, she hosted scores of free poetry and art workshops for all ages at neighborhood libraries and schools and worked closely with San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Arts Commission to launch major citywide initiatives to honor Native American Indigenous Peoples’ heritage.

SUMMARY:Esmail Rahimian - "I Was There Before: Stories Without Names"
DESCRIPTION:They said it didn’t happen. But someone remembers.\n\nEsmail Rahimian’s book is a gripping work of literary fiction that draws you into the moments where everything begins to break\, and nothing ever returns the same. A girl steps into the streets and does not come back. A mother listens through the night as the sky becomes a threat. A man carries what he cannot leave behind. A witness holds onto what others try to erase….

SUMMARY:Nashville Honeymoon
DESCRIPTION:Lynne Maes\, rhythm guitar & vocals; Hank Maninger\, lead guitar & vocals; Tim Wagar\, bass guitar; Paul Revelli drums \nYou’re in for two sets in honky tonk heaven. Mainstays of the Bay Area Americana scene\, and the Bird & Beckett bandstand\, for nearly a decade\, Nashville Honeymoon has traversed country\, rockabilly\, bluegrass\, and pop across four albums\, writing songs that uplift the tangled mess of day-to-day life and investigate universal themes of love and loss – often at the same time. Their latest album\, Sidewinder\, is true to its title\, offering a collection of songs that are grounded in classic country while edging into different sounds\, genres\, and themes that run through American pop music. This is some of the sweetest\, sauciest\, and most sincere country music you’ll ever hear. \n\nSUNDAY HAPPY HOUR! Grab your partner! Gather your kids! Call a friend! SUMMARY:Ella Dair Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Ella Dair is a NYC-based jazz vocalist. Originally from San Francisco\, she started singing at a young age\, performing with many Bay Area legends in her aunt’s swing band “Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers.” \nElla continued her education in music and performance with SFArtsEd\, falling in love with the songs of Harold Arlen and Kander & Ebb\, among other classics of the Great American Songbook. As a teenager she was a vocal soloist with the youth choir at Glide Memorial\, the renowned non-denominational church presided over by civil rights leader Cecil Williams. \nElla earned her bachelor’s degree from Bard College\, studying anthropology and Latin American studies with a particular interest in ethnomusicology. Her studies broadened her musical tastes and sent her to Mexico City\, where she lived post-grad. Ella then moved to New York City\, joining the staff at Dizzy’s Club at Jazz At Lincoln Center\, where she has been exposed to many of the greatest jazz musicians in the world. \nOn her regular trips to the West Coast Ella performs at The Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in San Francisco\, an iconic institution that has received rave reviews from the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. At the Royal Cuckoo\, Ella has sung with Etta James’ trumpet player Mike Olmos\, Lyle Lovett’s alto player Brad Leali\, and tenor saxophonist Howard Wiley\, a resident Artistic Director at the SFJAZZ Center. \nElla covers a range of material\, including jazz standards\, soul\, country and folk tunes. She has a keen eye for unique and beautiful songs\, and she continues to work tirelessly on expanding her repertoire\, always on the lookout for obscure gems in addition to timeless classics.
