SUMMARY:In a Silent Way: Joel Harrison Quintet plays Miles Davis
DESCRIPTION:Paul Hanson\, reeds; Joel Harrison\, guitar; Michael Manring\, bass; Scott Amendola\, drums \nFormer Berkeley resident\, guitarist Joel Harrison\, returns to the Bay Area to journey into Miles Davis’ iconic 1970 record\, “In a Silent Way.” The band consists of old allies\, some of the Bay Area’s finest and most creative musicians—they will also perform some of Harrison’s original music. Harrison recently released a live record from the Big Ears Festival of this music. The band’s approach will be to “make it new.” \nGuitarist\, composer\, arranger\, lyricist\, writer\, educator and vocalist Joel Harrison has “created a new blueprint for jazz” (New Orleans Times-Picayune). He has released 27 records\, a body of work that connects multiple American traditions. While rooted in jazz\, his music moves fluidly through classical\, rock\, country\, and American roots music. The New York Times has described his work as “protean… brilliant.” \nHarrison is the founder and director of the Alternative Guitar Summit\, an annual festival devoted to innovative and unconventional guitar music. The Summit has featured artists such as Fred Frith\, Nels Cline\, Bill Frisell\, Julian Lage\, Michael Gregory Jackson\, Mary Halvorson and Pat Metheny\, who has called it “one of the most interesting and distinguished forums for guitar on the planet.” Harrison is the author of Guitar Talk: Conversations with Visionary Players\, Pity the Genius and Modern Jazz Standards for Guitar. \nhttps://joelharrison.com/\nhttps://www.paulhansonmusic.com/\nhttps://manthing.com/\nhttps://scottamendola.com/ \n$25 cover charge; byob\nStudents $10 \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733

SUMMARY:Vince Lateano Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Noel Jewkes\, reeds; Dick Whittington\, piano; Peter Barshay\, bass; Vince Lateano\, drums \nDrummer Vince Lateano typically performs with his trio and a guest on the 3rd Sunday every other month (i.e. January\, March\, May\, July\, September\, November) at happy hour prices. \nHOWEVER\, this one’s special\, with Dick Whittington swapping in on piano and reed player Noel Jewkes along for the ride. Better bring a twenty for the band this time out! \nFour top-tier veteran jazz players reunite with reverberations reaching back to 1960s Sacramento\, when and where Vince — recently graduated from high school and just off the road from touring with his paisano-across-the-generations\, the New Yorker Carmen Cavallaro\, “The Poet of the Piano\,” darling of San Francisco’s Top of the Mark showroom still riding high 17 Decca hits from Dancing in the Dark in 1939 to his 1945 light classical “Chopin’s Polonaise” (the “Heroic Polonaise\,” in A-flat Major\, Opus 53) — first met Noel. \nBorn and raised in Utah\, Noel played from the age of 12 in his family’s band\, the Jewkes Orchestra\, which traveled widely in the region\, delivering a swinging and danceable beat to audiences of hip Indians\, farmers and city slickers in rural assembly halls\, lakeside resorts and downtown hotels. But at 20\, he set his sights on California and landed in Fresno. Traveling the Central Valley with his band\, he came to Sacramento\, where Vince first played with him. Then it was off to the Army for Vince while the Vietnam raged on\, and Noel soon found his footing in San Francisco as the psychedelic sixties blossomed. Over the six decades that have ensued\, he’s been a unique force in jazz. When Vince rousted out of the Army in ’65\, he made his way to San Francisco\, and became a key player on the local scene\, touring from time to time\, with Woody Herman\, Cal Tjader\, Vince Guaraldi\, Stan Getz\, and working all the local clubs. Vince and Noel have worked together on the the bandstand countless times in the decades that have ensued. \nDick Whittington came up from L.A. in 1961\, the same year Noel made it to California. \n

SUMMARY:Scott Foster Meets the Masters... Buethe/Wiitala/Lateano
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Scott Foster performs with an ever-evolving cast of collaborators on the 3rd Friday of every month at Bird & Beckett. Lately\, he’s been focused on bringing to our bandstand some of the great jazz players who have contributed so much to the depth and beauty of the San Francisco jazz landscape over the past seven decades. Tonight\, Scott has invited guitarist Brad Buethe\, bassist John Wiitala and drummer Vince Lateano to join him in two sets of music. \nFor 24 years and counting now\, Scott has been a consistent and wonderful presence at Bird & Beckett. In late 2002\, veteran tenor sax player Chuck Peterson invited Scott to join Chuck’s weekly “Jazz in the Bookshop” gig in a combo that featured three jazz veterans — saxophonist/arranger Bill Perkins\, bassist Don Prell and drummer Jimmy Ryan. At the time\, Scott was still in his early twenties and had only recently returned to the Bay Area\, fresh out of Berklee College of Music in Boston. He’s been on our stage virtually every month since 2002\, and has led his own date here each month for the past dozen years. \nVince Lateano\, a Sacramento kid\, got his start on the local scene in his early twenties under the mentorship of the late drummer John Markham\, when Vince rousted out of the Army in the mid-1960s\, playing all the jazz clubs of the era\, touring\, leading the house band at Jazz at Pearl’s\, leading notorious jam sessions at Pier 23\, the Dogpatch Saloon\, the Seven Mile\, Sweeties\, Bird & Beckett… never pausing\, always happy to play close to home\, always swingin’. \nBrad Buethe came out of UC Berkeley in the late 1970s\, backing major artists including Joe Williams\, Jon Hendricks and John Handy in Bill Bell’s big band\, playing in David Hardiman’s San Francisco All-Stars Big Band in the chair most frequently associated with guitarist Calvin Keys\, and working in the Mark Levine Quintet\, before setting out for New York in 1982 where he played with Jack McDuff\, Jacky Byard and Barry Harris and led his own quintet with Joe Lovano and Mike Clark. Brad returned to San Francisco in 1989\, and the rest\, as they say\, is (more) history. One of the greats. \nJohn Wiitala cut his teeth in the late 1980s and early ’90s\, a fixture at Keystone Korner\, playing with Joe Henderson\, Junior Cook\, Charlie Rouse\, James Moody\, Bud Shank\, Cecil Payne and Jessica Williams\, touring with Williams as well as Richie Cole\, Arturo Sandoval and Shorty Rogers\, and appearing at jazz festivals including Monterey\, North Sea\, Montreux\, Detroit\, JVC/Concord. \nBird & Beckett is proud to have presented all four of these giants of Bay Area jazz countless times in the past twenty seven years (Vince was the drummer in the first jazz trio date at Bird & Beckett\, back in 1999\, in a combo put together by bassist John Clark with Lee Bloom on piano; Vince’s current trio with bassist Peter Barshay and pianist Ben Stolorow plays here on the third Sunday of every other month and conducts a monthly jam session here as well). \nWe’re more than pleased to hear these four musicians together tonight. \n$20 cover charge; byob.\nStudents $10. Kids free. \nFor a reservation\, call the bookshop at 415-586-3733.

SUMMARY:Dima + Four
DESCRIPTION:Dima\, vocals\nDavid Udolph\, piano\nChris Amberger\, bass\nAkira Tana\, drums \nSinging from the heart with a voice and style reminiscent of the early 50’s\, Dima was influenced at an early age by the music that surrounded her as a child: the classic sounds of jazz. \nShe began to develop her style as a jazz singer while studying with Merrill Hoover\, a well known jazz pianist best known for his eloquent accompaniment of vocalists such as Ernestine Anderson\, Anita O’Day\, and Mary Stallings. This rare opportunity set the foundation for her to establish her own unique approach to singing as she fell in love with the jazz standard. \nKnown for her command of the lyric\, beautiful soothing tone\, soulful improvisation\, and carefully chosen repertoire\, Dima keeps alive the true art of the jazz singer. She’s backed on this date by the best in the business\, attesting to the respect she merits for her art.

SUMMARY:Morning Ragas: Vocalist Arjun Ravi Shankar with tabla accompaniment
DESCRIPTION:RootStock Arts and Bird & Beckett co-present Morning Ragas: a four-month series of Hindustani and Carnatic Classical Music concerts from 9 to 11 a.m. on the last Sunday of September\, October\, November and December. \nIn the Indian classical tradition\, ragas are extended compositions offering the performer a great latitude in improvisational expression and are aligned with specific times of day—a concept known as samay raga. The concerts in our series offer the rare\, transformative beauty of live\, time-specific morning ragas. Because most modern concerts take place in the evening\, hearing morning ragas performed live during their intended hours is a rarity. When done properly\, the music resonates in natural harmony with the surrounding atmosphere\, creating a deeply grounding and tranquil experience. \nOn November 29th\, vocalist Arjun Ravi Shankar with tabla player Gaurav Kale will perform a program of Hindustani morning ragas. \n——- \nAbout the artists:  \nArjun Ravi Shankar is a Bay Area-based vocalist studying Hindustani classical music in the Gwalior\, Agra\, and Jaipur gayakis under Dr. Swapnil Chaphekar\, a disciple of Pt. Dr. Ram Deshpande. He has also studied Carnatic classical music since childhood\, currently under Krishna Parthasarathy\, a disciple of legendary vocalist Dr. K. J. Yesudas. \nHis musical journey spans Indian and Western classical music\, musical theatre\, fusion\, and Indian film music. As part of the IndianRaga Fellowship\, Arjun has composed and performed in music videos garnering over four million views collectively. He has also toured internationally and performed at the White House with his university choir. \nThrough his Sangeet Scientist initiative\, Arjun also explores the scientific principles underlying music and music education. He continues to perform and teach Indian classical and contemporary vocal music in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nGaurav Kale is a tabla player from the Bay Area\, who started his training under Shri Mandar Pimpale. He has since had the opportunity to learn from Pandit Ramdas Palsule\, and today studies under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music. \n——- \nNo reservations are required; however\, those with mobility issues should call the bookshop ahead of the date to be accommodated – 415-586-3733. \nOur Morning Ragas series is co-presented with Rootstock Arts.

SUMMARY:Esmail Rahimian - "I Was There Before: Stories Without Names"
DESCRIPTION:They said it didn’t happen. But someone remembers.\n\nEsmail Rahimian’s book is a gripping work of literary fiction that draws you into the moments where everything begins to break\, and nothing ever returns the same. A girl steps into the streets and does not come back. A mother listens through the night as the sky becomes a threat. A man carries what he cannot leave behind. A witness holds onto what others try to erase….

Her studies broadened her musical tastes and sent her to Mexico City\, where she lived post-grad. Ella then moved to New York City\, joining the staff at Dizzy’s Club at Jazz At Lincoln Center\, where she has been exposed to many of the greatest jazz musicians in the world. \nOn her regular trips to the West Coast Ella performs at The Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in San Francisco\, an iconic institution that has received rave reviews from the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. At the Royal Cuckoo\, Ella has sung with Etta James’ trumpet player Mike Olmos\, Lyle Lovett’s alto player Brad Leali\, and tenor saxophonist Howard Wiley\, a resident Artistic Director at the SFJAZZ Center. \nElla covers a range of material\, including jazz standards\, soul\, country and folk tunes. She has a keen eye for unique and beautiful songs\, and she continues to work tirelessly on expanding her repertoire\, always on the lookout for obscure gems in addition to timeless classics.

SUMMARY:Virtual Poets: Kim Shuck hosts featured readers TBA + open mic
DESCRIPTION:Kim Shuck conducts the twice-monthly Virtual Poets series\, with featured readers followed by an open mic on the 2nd Monday of each month and an all-open mic session on the 4th Monday of each month. \nKim embraces the fool and jester qualities of being a modern poet and artist. She is a devotee of San Francisco\, whose hills she wanders nearly always on foot. Her maternal grandparents met at the Polish Hall on Shotwell and she spent many hours with her mother and grandmother wandering the Mission St. Miracle Mile\, taking books out of the Mission Branch library and watching aquarium fish on the ground floor of what used to be Hale’s. She firmly believes in carrying a bubble wand\, keys\, pen and notebook and cats cradle string at all times. \nKim\, whose poetry draws on her multiethnic background which includes Polish and Cherokee heritage\, and her experiences as a lifelong resident of San Francisco\, served as San Francisco’s seventh Poet Laureate\, from 2017-2021. In 2019\, she was awarded an inaugural National Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets\, and a PEN Oakland Censorship Award. Among her many books and chapbooks\, Pick a Garnet to Sleep In\, one in a long line of poetry collections\,was published in 2024\, and her book of essays Noodle\, Rant\, Tangent was published in 2022. \nIn her term as Poet Laureate\, she hosted scores of free poetry and art workshops for all ages at neighborhood libraries and schools and worked closely with San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco Arts Commission to launch major citywide initiatives to honor Native American Indigenous Peoples’ heritage. \nKim is assisted by Brett Benson\, a heroic volunteer who keeps the Zoom going. When he’s not doing that\, he’s a high school teacher down the Peninsula apiece\, and runs an open mic at Le Promenade opposite the Balboa Theater in the Outer Richmond District. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84350265713?pwd=eE84V3BYdWxiSFBHNHhmdUt1WTUzdz09 \nMeeting ID: 843 5026 5713\nPasscode: 244211
