No reservations needed. Stay for a tune, stay for two hours & two sets. Jazz is here for you at Bird & Beckett, and this band represents the legacy that the “Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project” aims to sustain and extend for today’s ears and tomorrow’s jazz minds.

Jazz in the bookshop was started in earnest in 2002, when tenor player Chuck Peterson (at left in the accompanying photo, with Tony at the drum kit, Glen Deardorff on guitar and Dorothy Lefkovitz, vocalist, at right) proposed that if we’d give him a weekly berth, he’d bring us experienced talent and make sure they were adequately paid if we’d do what we could to help on that score. We taught our patrons that fair compensation for developed, studied talent was only right, and now, with their and your help as donors to our nonprofit Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project, we’re pretty consistently there. With the help of our generous donor base (that can and should include you!), we manage a fair wage for the many hundreds of musicians that cross our stage, though we’re still a bit dependent on audience revenue. So turn out and pay a cover charge (cash please!) so that we can keep our end of the bargain and remain a sustainable source for live, professional jazz in a delightful listening environment, in San Francisco, in the neighborhood of Glen Park, one of the coolest neighborhoods on the planet, says Time Out magazine!

The four players on the bandstand tonight have decades of experience in the music. They swing and navigate the changes with practiced grace, skill and love.

You’ll be happy you dropped in, whether for a tune or for two sets. It’s something to write home about!
