Brilliant young reed player Eli Maliwan is the centerpiece of this exploration of the jazz saxophone canon, prominently featuring the work of John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter. Her close associate, trumpeter Noah Frank, shares the front line for what is sure to be an exciting and enlightening two sets of music. Drummer Jon Frank leads the rhythm section (Dave Gibbons, piano; Rob Woodcock, bass) in vividly embodying the art of small combo jazz as it was perfected in mid-20th century America and as it’s played today in an era that desperately needs ways to relate on a high intellectual and spiritual plane.
