Actually Strictly Clarinets!
We’ve got nothing against bluegrass and its allied arts, but today we’ll stay sweetly oblivious to the throng in Golden Gate Park Sunday, listening to this conclave… We rather imagine they could kick ass on some bluegrass if they had a mind to. But we can’t tell these musicians what to do! Why would we? Come and be entranced, enthralled… well-entertained and thoroughly charmed, at the very least!
Dave Tidball, clarinet and bass clarinet
Charlie Keagle, clarinet
Dick Mathias, clarinet and bass clarinet
Jim Dukey, clarinet and bass clarinet
The ACQ plays original compositions and arrangements by the quartet members for various combinations of soprano and bass clarinets, covering a wide range of styles from early jazz to contemporary concert music, with stopping points between.
Original arrangements of:
Bix Beiderbecke’s “Betcha I Getcha”
Horace Silver’s “Moon Rays”
Fats Waller’s “Jitterbug Waltz”
Bill Evan’s “Very Early”
Kyle Gann’s “Dance of Indeterminate Ethnicity”
Wayne Shorter’s “ESP”
Richard Rogers’ “Johnny One-Note”
Chick Corea’s “Matrix”
Gordon Jenkins’ “Goodbye”
As well as these original compositions by Albatross members:
Charlie Keagle’s “Blooz”
