Saxophonist/composer Michael Zilber is hailed as “one of the best players and composers around anywhere, period!†by jazz great David Liebman and called “one of the true masters of the modern jazz saxophone†by All About Jazz.
A multiple Downbeat honoree for his CDs and educational work, Mike Zilber will be debuting new pieces on this gig. He has 10 albums as leader or co-leader to his credit and has worked with a slew of the greats, from Dave Liebman to Miroslav Vitous, Mike Clark and Dizzy Gillespie, among others. He also writes for and plays in the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, the Bay Area’s premier composers’ big band.
Mike is joined on this Bird & Beckett date by drummer Jason Lewis, a Bay Area stalwart particularly well known for his work with the late bassist John Shifflet; along the way, he’s worked with Gary Burton, James Moody, Mark Murphy, Paul McCandless, Larry Coryell, Darol Anger, Regina Carter, James Carter, John Handy, Anton Schwartz , Mark Levine, Peter Apfelbaum and Kurt Elling, among others. Classically trained, he has also performed with the San Jose Symphony and the San Jose Civic Light Opera.
