Steeped in music at a young age — the son of a renowned jazz pianist and one of our favorite jazz vocalists — Smith is a multi-instrumentalist. His talents on vibes, sax and drums have been developed to a high degree over many years. A couple of years ago, he added the stand-up bass; and during the covidian era, he’s been working on the guitar.

It’s not that he has a mania for playing them all at once, though. Tonight, he’ll have three of the Bay Area’s top jazz talents covering the guitar, bass and drums.

It’s just that his creative hunger is not something he can easily tamp down. Did we mention that besides jazz, which he was playing professionally from age 14, he’s had significant forays into rock (Grand Lodge, with Michael Parsons and Tony Sales back in the early aughts) and singer/songwriter territory (recently in a duo with Justin Rock). He’s also a painter and a writer. Some people have all the fun.

Tonight, we’ll have all that jazz!

As at any self-respecting jazz club, you’re asked to pay a cover charge tonight, though the bar is closed so you’ll have to bring your own beverages, adult or otherwise, to your couch or wherever you’re watching this one. That alone will save you some bucks.

$20 is a fair cover for a quartet, don’t you think? We use the money to pay the musicians a “guaranteed fair wage” and to keep the lights on. The first $600 you donate (collectively) goes to the musicians.

After that, we take a share for the club.
And after that… the band gets 80% of every additional dollar you contribute.
