Greg Abate is on the road again! And he’s blowing through Bird & Beckett twice this Saturday, his third Bird & Beckett visit in five years.

In the morning, Greg will conduct a workshop of interest to players and fans both; and in the evening, he’ll lead a quartet with local heroes Ben Stolorow on piano, Eric Markowitz on bass and Mike Mitchell on drums through some beautiful material drawn from his just-released album of compositions by pianist Kenny Barron.

Pay $20 to attend the 10am workshop in person and you’ll be admitted to the 7:30pm concert for half price. Active students of jazz performance and composition pay half price at both the workshop and concert.

Greg has been on the move since he graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1972. In 1973/74 he was on the road with Ray Charles; in 1986 he was hired to play tenor saxophone in the Artie Shaw band. He’s appeared with Jerome Richardson and Red Rodney. Born in Rhode Island, he’s still based there, touring incessantly year after year up and down the Eastern Seaboard, all across America and extensively in Europe.

After a hiatus of very nearly two years for obvious reasons, he’s back on the road this fall with dozens of stops in the U.S. from mid-August to mid-October and twenty dates in the UK through late November. His Bird & Beckett hit is right at the mid-point of that intense run of shows!

In the workshop, Greg will discuss the tradition of jazz, and the difference between improvising and actually playing jazz. He’ll also discuss harmony, playing some voicings on the piano and talking about what happens in the performance between the musicians. He’ll then cover the facets of touring — taking jazz on the road; and how he’s built a career on a touring schedule that has made him one of the legendary road warriors of jazz.
