230 Jones Street
Charlie McCarthy, saxophone
Si Perkoff, piano
Glen Deardorff, guitar
Chuck Bennett, bass
Tony Johnson, drums
Drummer Tony Johnson brings in a quartet on the fourth Friday of each month. In odd numbered months, it’s the “Tony Johnson Quartet,” featuring top San Francisco players Bob Kenmotsu on tenor, Keith Saunders on piano and Eric Markowitz on bass.
And in the even numbered months, like December, it’s 230 Jones Street! Join us for two sets of top flight jazz, from swing to bop to bossa.
At its heart, 230 Jones Street is the band founded by the late tenor player Chuck Peterson in about 2005, after having first introduced Glen Park to a weekly Friday jazz booking at Bird & Beckett in late 2002 — twenty years ago!
In October 2002, Chuck was introduced to us as a neighborhood guy who got his start here in 1950, when he came down from the Pacific Northwest to enroll at San Francisco State to study jazz saxophone. His cohort became key players on the local scene, working the clubs and bars, playing in television studio bands, backing touring musicians, taking wedding and corporate gigs, teaching music in the schools and just generally living the jazz life. Among his colleagues from those early days were drummer John Markham, bassists Dean Reilly and Al Obidinski, tenor players Howard Dudune, Bill Perkins, Hal Stein and Ray Loeckle, trumpeter Eddie Figuero, trombonist Frank Phipps, pianists John Marabuto, Flip Nunez and Al Plank, and dozens of other fine musicians who built a beautiful local jazz scene. Chuck’s group at Bird & Beckett grew from a trio to a quartet with Scott Foster, Don Prell and Jimmy Ryan and then stabilized as a quintet with the addition of Bill Perkins, which Chuck then dubbed the “230 Jones Street, Local 6 Literary Jazz Band” in tribute to the union headquarters here in the City where he and his colleagues conspired to hang out, play music and plot ways to make jazz a sustainable career through solidarity in pursuit of professional wages and working conditions!
Tony Johnson joined 230 Jones Street in about 2010, and has led the band since Chuck retired in 2018.
Come out and hear what beautiful music can come from musicians who’ve enjoyed long professional careers in jazz!
BYOB and a twenty for the band!
