Eric Shifrin has been entertaining the swells and the swindlers in the bars, boites, salons and saloons of San Francisco for decades, with a vast repertoire drawn from the American Songbook, the pearls of early New Orleans, jazz chestnuts and any number of musical curios he’s found along the way. His monthly, 2nd Fridays residency at Bird & Beckett in 2024 finds him digging into the compositions of some of the great talents behind the tunes that everyone whistles, with lyrics that make up a good part of the American lexicon. He never fails to charm, and his pianistic skills are beyond reproach!

Afro-Peruvian jazz!
New music from Peru and new arrangements of jazz standards.

Born in Lima, Peru but raised in the northern city of Trujillo, Sebastian Pinillos took up the tenor sax at age 12, the flute at 18 and the clarinet at 21, and has been performing professionally since 2012. From the Bahamas to Peru to New York, he’s had the opportunity to play with world class artists in genres from reggae to jazz to Afro-Peruvian music.

Between 2018 and 2021, Sebastian lived in South Florida and spent time fostering his community by working with nonprofits focused on providing music education to low-income schools. In 2021, he moved to the Bay Area to spend a year at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the Roots, Jazz & American Music program.

Currently residing in Oakland, Sebastian performs locally and is creating a new set of jazz standards based on the popular songs ingrained in Peruvian culture. Just as a vast preponderance of the American jazz standards are based on Tin Pan Alley tunes of the early twentieth century, Sebastian has deduced that the popular music of Peru can similarly form the base of a new set of standards accessible to Latin American and players everywhere of the global music that is jazz.
