Two shows on Friday, December 5th! John Calloway’s Fall to Winter Musings followed by The Lost Trio.
6-8pm – Dr. John Calloway brings a quartet featuring Greg Jacobs on piano, Sam Bevan on bass and Scott Amendola on drums, with John leading the combo on an array of flutes. John had a long career as an educator in the SFUSD and at San Francisco State University, but has pursued an even longer career as one of the top West Coast jazz players whose work has carried him to Cuba, the Philippines and throughout the world. This “Fall to Winter Musings” at Bird & Beckett have been an annual occasion for a fresh assessment of where he’s at musically and personally, and always features top players from the jazz and latin music scene. The marvelous vocalist Angie Doctor will join the date for a few tunes on each set. $20 cash at the door; $10 for students; kids free. Reservations can be made by phone — call the shop at 415-586-3733. BYOB.
8:30-10pm – The Lost Trio is a long-standing group comprising Phillip Greenlief on saxophone, Dan Seamans on bass and Tom Hassett on drums. Formed in 1994 and stepping into existence with a steady gig on Thursday nights at the Rose Pistola in San Francisco’s North Beach district followed by four-year stint on Sundays at Cato’s Ale House in Oakland, the trio has a history of touring that has focused on the west coast, where they’ve enjoyed festival dates, performance lectures and workshops at colleges and universities, live radio broadcasts and in-store performances. The Lost Trio has released six acclaimed CDs and are currently preparing to record a new album of original compositions. They’ve performed memorable shows to a packed house at Bird & Beckett since at least 2014. Here comes another! With Phillip having relocated to the East Coast in the last year or so, the chances to catch the trio are becoming rare, so make your reservation by calling the shop at 415-586-3733. Bring a twenty to help us pay the band, and bring something to sip if you’re so inclined. Students pay $10. Bring cash, please!
