But nothing beats being in the room with the music & the musicians!
Good news!
This week, we signed on with a fiscal sponsor–the 501(c)3 nonprofit Jazz in the Neighborhood–and have now resumed offering tax-deductibility for your donations to the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project (“BBCLP”).
Write your check to Jazz in the Neighborhood and note “BBCLP deductible donation” in the memo line, then drop it off at the shop or mail it to us. We’ll forward it to Jazz in the Neighborhood for safekeeping. Cash is fine if you prefer. Or donate through Paypal, once or on a recurring basis.
Bright moments ahead, thanks to you!
The BBCLP makes it possible for Bird & Beckett to present live cultural events, paying a guaranteed fair wage to the musicians and at least a modest stipend to our featured poets, and also to pursue our publishing activities.
Where it stands now:
In 2024, Bird & Beckett celebrated a quarter century in business since our doors opened in 1999 on Diamond Street, as well as 22 years presenting live music in the shop since weekly jazz evenings began in 2002.
In 2024, we also celebrated 17 years of our nonprofit “Cultural Legacy Project,” created with the help of some devoted store patrons in 2008 (the year we moved into our current digs on Chenery) to underwrite our ever-expanding calendar of live music and poetry, as well as our literary journal and chapbook publishing activity.
But this year we also encountered a significant drop in revenues from book sales and a dwindling of audiences and revenues for our events. We also stumbled in the reporting requirements for our nonprofit status, which impaired our pursuit of donations and grants. We expect nonprofit status to be fully restored by the end of the year, but can’t wait for that. We need to rebuild the BBCLP’s bank account, and return to solid profitability in the store, now!
The BBCLP is a key to the stability and sustainability of
Bird & Beckett as a neighborhood bookshop.
So, get your checkbook out!
Or send us your one-time or
recurring donation through Paypal!
Remember, checks should be made out to “Jazz in the Neighborhood,” with “BBCLP deductible donation” in the memo line. Recurring and one-time donations through Bird & Beckett’s Paypal account will also be routed through Jazz in the Neighborhood and will also be tax-deductible.
You’ll be joining–or re-joining–an intensely loyal group of supporters who we credit with keeping this cherished and unique Glen Park cultural institution alive.
A great many individual donors–mostly just neighborhood folks–have long favored us with annual donations ranging from $25 to the thousands of dollars. But they need your help. Don’t ask them to carry the torch alone. You’ll enjoy knowing you’re part of a bigger community than you knew existed.
Where we’re headed:
Going into 2025, the neighborhood’s new, renewed and expanded support will ensure the longevity of a neighborhood fixture that’s become a jewel in San Francisco’s crown.

And if you have grantwriting chops or experience in planning and executing fundraising drives, send us an email and we’ll build a team to mount a successful campaign in 2025, the first year in our second quarter century serving Glen Park and San Francisco!

The Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project
Our events are put on under the umbrella of the nonprofit Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project (the "BBCLP"). That's how we fund our ambitious schedule of 300 or so concerts and literary events every year.
The BBCLP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit...
