Billboard Magazine calls Jim Campilongo “an American treasure,” an accolade which this guitarist’s artistry and influential career has richly earned him. Time Out NYC describes Campilongo perfectly: “New York has no shortage of guitar heroes but few cover as many bases as Jim Campilongo. Campilongo reveals a range that extends from seductive country-swing to atmospheric jazz and well beyond.” New Yorker magazine says, “There it was again: the stinging treble, the spooky overtones, the strings snapping and booming under his hands, the sound of a Tele being played as skillfully and exuberantly as it can be played. It sounded like nothing and nobody else sounded like Jim Campilongo.”

With fifteen albums of original material and guest appearances on dozens of recordings–from his significant contribution on Cake’s million-selling “Prolonging the Magic” to (most recently) doing lead guitar duties with The Little Willies, his band with Norah Jones–Campilongo has played with JJ Cale, Al Anderson, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, Charlie Hunter, Peter Rowan, Nels Cline, Martha Wainwright, Bright Eyes, Steve Cardenas, Teddy Thompson and Burning Spear, to name a few. He has earned two gold records, and has written music for national ads for National Grid, Volkswagen, SBC, Michelin and Jack Daniel’s.

Campilongo also had repeat appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Later, with Jools Holland (BBC) and Abbey Road Sessions (BBC), and has been interviewed on many major radio shows.

Additionally, Campilongo is a published guitar teacher and contributing editor for Guitar Player Magazine. Campilongo’s TrueFire instructional video “Sonic Tele” continues to be a best seller along with his popular, homespun “Lessons By Mail,” offered on jimcampilongo.com. Campilongo’s virtuosity and originality has inspired a generation of guitar players. His songwriting uses a palette of the best in blues, country, jazz and rock with a sensitivity and wit that has also earned him the broad fan base that most instrumental guitarists never enjoy.

In 2013, Fender Guitars bestowed on Jim the honor of the Campilongo Signature Telecaster, a high quality instrument made by Fender’s elite Custom Shop. Campilongo is also a featured endorser of D’Addario string company, Celestion speakers and Jam pedals.

In 2017, master guitar builder Chihoe Hahn collaborated on the Hahn Jim Campilongo Model C Telecaster, a boutique guitar of the highest quality at an affordable price. Chihoe and Jim are delighted with the rave reviews and interest.

In 2018, Jim released his 12th record “Jim Campilongo with Chris Morrissey and Josh Dion Live at Rockwood Music Hall NYC,” an album of the best performances from over one hundred live shows. Nels Cline appears on two tunes and Guitar Moderne calls it “one of the years 10 best releases.”

In 2020, Sundazed Music/Modern Harmonic, one of the finest labels in the world, issued “Best of Jim Campilongo–Volume One.” Campilongo’s previous records were whittled down to 40 minutes, making it the cream of the crop.

In 2021, Blue Hen released “Two Guitars” with Jim Campilongo & Luca Benedetti. The stripped-down format was a challenge, but the freedom of the duo was exhibited in full flight. Guitarist UK wrote “…a musical balm for troubled times…,” “…Chopin meets Chet in dreamland…,” and “…the effect is by turns sincere, strange and beautiful.” The “Two Guitars” album was featured in Guitar Player Magazine. Under the headline “STRINGED VICTORY,” Guitar Player called it  “…a record forged in shared aspirations, experience, respect, and heart…” and went on to say, “…Campilongo and Benedetti are enormously accomplished players with massive creative palettes” and noted that “…one of the many delights of Two Guitars is that you can hear the rapport of the two guitarists unfold right before you on every track…”

In 2023, Jim released a duo record with Steve Cardenas (Paul Motion, Charlie Haden) on Sunnyside Records. Making A Scene wrote  “…Compatible almost beyond description, these two guitarists deliver a sonically pleasing dish, that will inevitably both prove relaxing and smile inducing….” New York City Jazz Record wrote “New Year celebrates the artistic relationship of Jim Campilongo and Steve Cardenas,” noting that “…their styles are distinctive, yet highly compatible …, ” with “…motivic development, barline-defying phrases and fluid swing….”  Vintage Guitar praised Jim & Steve, saying that “their harmonic personalities merge… Six string giants…originals like Campilongo’s ‘Miss Venezuela” are pure acoustic ecstasy.”

In 2024, Jim released the Jim Campilongo 4TET record, “She Loved the Coney Island Freak Show”–his 16th record of original material. “…the typically varied and endlessly entertaining She Loved the Coney Island Freak Show…,” wrote Bill Milkowski in Guitar Player Magazine.  https://jimcampilongo1.bandcamp.com/album/jim-campilongo-4tet-she-loved-the-coney-island-freak-show

They have collaborated on the Jim Campilongo Model T guitar based on the design of a Duosonic with a Firebird humbucking pickup in neck position and a gold anodized pickguard. The Model T is constructed in Bueno Aires by fine craftsmen with reasonable affordability. Jim continues writing his popular monthly column “Vinyl Treasures” in Guitar Player Magazine.

Until his recent return to California, The Jim Campilongo Electric Trio performed every Monday at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall, which Time Out New York recommended as “one of the city’s strongest,” touting “Monday night means Jim Campilongo.”

Jim recently moved back to the Bay Area to continue his career & studies while enjoying the Bay Area quality of life and being closer to his family.

THE NEW YORK TIMES
“Through the lean ropy sound of his Fender Telecaster, Mr. Campilongo connects American styles (Blues, Rock, Country, Jazz, R&B) in a sly knowing way.”

THE NEW YORKER
“Jim Campilongo holds court. American music is a melting pot of influences, but few guitarists capture the nuances as well as Campilongo does.”

NY POST
“Campilongo is one of those New York secrets. A master of the electric guitar, he weaves in spaghetti western picks, blues chords and jazz refs into his haunting tunes, a combo of originals and covers.”

NYC VILLAGE VOICE
“An engaging improviser whose interest in entertainment is equal to his interest in art. His supple moves can keep an audience enthralled – meaning their asses wiggle and their minds jiggle.”

JAZZTIMES
“You’ve got the makings of a very twisted guitar hero who deserves worshipping. Clever, crafty, quirky and cool.”

THE NEW YORKER
“There it was again: the stinging treble, the spooky overtones, the strings snapping and booming under his hands the sound of a Tele being played as skillfully and exuberantly as it can be played it sounded like nothing and nobody else sounded like Jim Campilongo.”

TIMEOUT NEW YORK
“New York has no shortage of guitar heroes but few cover as many bases as Jim Campilongo  reveals a range that extends from seductive country-swing to atmospheric jazz and well beyond.”
