Steve Carrington is a masterful saxophonist whose sound fuses the rich traditions of jazz with the pulse of modern innovation. With a career spanning collaborations with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Cyrus Chestnut, and Kool and The Gang, his electrifying performances captivate audiences with raw energy and deep emotional resonance. Whether leading his own ensemble or sharing the stage with jazz greats, his dynamic style, technical brilliance, and soul-stirring melodies make every performance an unforgettable experience.

Born in East Baltimore, Maryland, he grew up intrigued by the music of the jazz and blues greats, attended the Baltimore School for the Arts and graduated from Frederick Douglass High, an institution with a rich musical legacy, with alumni that include Cab Calloway, Eubie Blake and Ellis Larkin.

Steve is in town for a recording session with bassist Billy Edwards and drummer Minchan Kim, and we’re pleased to have the opportunity to present this trio for one great night at Bird & Beckett.

Minchan Kim, after completing his bachelor’s degree, toured Europe with Martin Zenker and continued touring in North and South America as well as Asia. He also taught at the Paekche College of the Arts, the Hanyang Academy and the Seoul Jazz Academy. He has  performed with Kenny Washington, Jin Pureum, Jesse Davis and the Hyejin Quartet. Kim was named a “Rising Star” among drummers by South Korea’s Jazz People magazine in 2012. In 2023, he received second prize at the Kurt Mass Jazz Award.

Billy Edwards was trained in the Bay Area by The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol, who introduced him to Buster Williams. These relationships gave him the opportunity to perform music full time as a sideman in New York for many legendary jazz artists including Ralph Moore, Roy McCurdy, and Calvin Keys.
