The coming two weeks kick off with the doleful Johnny Lonely singing an evening’s worth of your favorite pop hits of rejection and dejection–though his sidekick J. Raoul Brody seems perennially unable to resist trying to lighten the mood, even hopefully insisting on the occasional shift to a major key. Johnny is constitutionally unable to oblige, however.
Expect “Cry Me A River,” “Misery,” “You Keep Me Hanging On” and, yes, a dollop of “Sunshine and Lollipops” bound to turn dark…
Tunes by the likes of The Beatles, George Jones, Julie London and Motown, all with one thing–heartbreak–in common, will be assayed by Messrs. Lonely and Brody with the help of trumpet player Bill Ortiz and vocalist Dave Terry.
But! After that little wallow in the emotional mire, a run of jazz dates gets underway, promising to restore your faith in the power of music to uplift, propelling you, we hope, to a restored faith in possibility. They call jazz the sound of surprise, and that it is…
And, oh yes, Walker Brents slips in a contemplation of the surreal poetic tao of Phillip Lamantia’s poetry on Thursday the 21st… For that one, sit back at home and take it in via the livestream, with an elixir of your choosing at hand to derange the senses. If you like, you can knock on the window of the locked shop to be admitted. We’ll find you a chair. It’s not a bad way to go…
For any of our shows, you’re usually on the mark if you come equipped with a twenty for the artists and something to sip. You can call the shop for a reservation. Just dial 415-586-3733, and do endeavor to arrive by showtime, lest we give up your seats to the throng.
