Kelly Dessaint in conversation with Denise Sullivan
SF Lives: Live Talks, every second Sunday morning
live streamed from the bookshop

Join San Francisco columnist Denise Sullivan for a series of morning discussions with The City’s arts and cultural leaders and lesser-known workers, the everyday people who help make this place we call home, every second Sunday at 10 am, live streamed from Bird & Beckett Books in Glen Park.

This morning, Sunday, July 11 at 10 a.m., Denise will engage Kelly Dessaint in a conversation on independent publishing, zine making, writing and driving-for-hire in the pre and post-pandemic Bay Area.

Kelly Dessaint is a veteran of the small press. He has been pushing print media as a writer, editor, designer and publisher since the ’90s. He founded Phony Lid Books in 1999 to publish paperbacks by underground writers, played in a bunch of bands, did odd jobs and peddled rare books at flea markets around LA. In 2014, he moved to Oakland and started driving for Uber and Lyft, documenting the good, the bad, but mostly the ugly side, of driving for hire in San Francisco.

He is the author of the novel A Masque of Infamy and a discarded memoir, No Fun: How Punk Rock Saved My Life. His column, I Drive S.F. has appeared in the Examiner for the past six years. He lives in West Oakland with his wife and young daughter.

View Bird & Beckett’s live streams on our YouTube channel and our Facebook page.  Though the conversation will be live streamed before regular store hours, you’re welcome to come in person. Just call the store a day or two in advance and reserve a seat – 415-586-3733, and be sure to show up before 10, as we’ll lock the door then to concentrate on the task at hand — getting the conversation out into the stream for the world at home, still padding around in their bedroom slippers.
