Walker Talks…a live streamed rumination from the darkened shop.
Walker Brents III on the mythopoeic California of Ursula Le Guin.
Walker addresses topics in poetry, mythology & folklore, philosophy and more, once a month. Find Walker’s talks on our YouTube channel or Facebook page; or at showtime, right at the top of this website. Audiences in the store are welcome (knock on the window for admission, and bring $5 or $10 for Walker), but this is primarily a live streamed program.

Charlie McCarthy has displayed a singular mastery of the saxophone over his sixty years’ prominence in the local jazz community. You can hear him regularly at Bird & Beckett in the 230 Jones Street Band, and at venues throughout the region and beyond in combos, big bands and jazz orchestras as well as on numerous studio sessions for albums, films and other media.
Friday, January 16, 6:00 – 8:00pm
{$20 suggested cover charge; pay what you can. $5 for students; kids free}
Scott Foster Combo
The Masters Series
Charlie McCarthy, saxophone
Scott Foster, guitar
Luke Schwartz, guitar
Scott Foster, long considered our favorite guitarist, has been a consistent presence on the Bird & Beckett stage for nearly a quarter century, since October 2002. He has led his own combo here, newly constituted each time out, on a monthly basis for about fifteen years. In “The Masters Series” — an occasional feature of his third-Fridays residency — Scott invites an elder statesperson of the Bay Area jazz community to share their unique artistry in a duo or trio setting.
Friday, January 16, 8:30 – 10:00pm
{$20 cover charge; $10 for students; kids home in bed}
Lucas Davis Trio
Lucas Davis, trumpet; Isaac Coyle, bass; Miles Turk, drums
Young Turks of contemporary jazz. Original compositions, and music by the masters that inspire these vital young musicians.
Saturday, January 17, 7:30 – 9:30pm
{$20 cover charge; $10 for students; kids free}
Symbiosis Quartet
Darren Johnston trumpet; Adam Shulman, piano; Sam Trapchak, bass; Tim Bulkley, drums
Think of it as musical mutual aid; an intuitive and highly advantageous merger of individual sensibilities.
Sunday, January 18, 5:00pm
{$20 suggested for adults; byob.
Students, $10. Kids, free.

Kai Lyons with the
Vince Lateano Trio.
Ben Stolorow, piano.
Peter Barshay, bass.
Vince Lateano, drums.
Kai Lyons, guitar.
Swing to bop, bossa and beyond. Beyond being just an amazing and uniquely talented young guitarist, Kai is a serious musicologist who has traveled and internalized rhythms and musical languages and dialects from South America to the Caribbean to West Africa, the source of the blues that informs modern jazz. Heady stuff, all true! But don’t take it too serious… Vince runs a relaxed & fun trio.
and to top it off…
Sunday, January 18, 7:30pm
{pay what you like & byob}
MUCH MORE FUN

A word on our food & drink policy, such as it is:
You can bring your own beverages to the shows, but please, no food other than quiet & non-aromatic snacks! The food policy is somewhat looser on our early evening (5pm & 6pm) shows, especially if you’re bringing the kids, but try not to get too carried away! For the most part, we ask that you dine at home or at one of our fine neighborhood restaurants, all of which are quite wonderful in their individual qualities and which we can enumerate for you upon request. Glen Park sports a range of dining possibilities, none of which will disappoint: from Northern Italian cuisine & the wood fired cuisine of the Aquitaine region of Southern France; to wonderful Thai, Chinese and Japanese restaurants, a purveyor of delicious thin crust pizza, a renowned taqueria, and a market that has a terrific deli counter and outdoor seating. Passing through on the Crosstown Trail or coming for a midday stroll in Glen Canyon? Pick up a sandwich at The Cheese Boutique across from the bookshop. Owned and operated by Rashid & Nada Malouf, their shop is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 4, and features Lebanese delectables they make themselves.
