Fried, Flipped or Fake, Proposition Chicken has something for everyone — and 10% of your tab goes to Bird & Beckett every Monday in April, from 9am to 9pm. It’s their Non-Profit Mondays policy, and they do it year round! They serve great food all year round as well.
From ten bucks in revenue on all the April Mondays, a buck goes to Bird & Beckett. Your humble proprietor and friends have roadtested the yardbird & tofu and have proclaimed them and all their sides quite delicious and modestly priced!
So plan to get breakfast, lunch or dinner on Monday April 20, and then turn out Monday April 27th at 6pm for a party on their streetfront patio, with live music and a scattering of poets curated for your dining pleasure by the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project.
You’ll hear a friendly local jazz trio featuring Joe DeAndreis, saxophone; Tim Renner, bass ukulele; and Skooter Fein, drums, followed by Hank Maninger & His Jukebox Charlies; and closing out with the Kai Lyons Trio, plus a smattering of poets.
Buy some grub and a drink to show some love for Proposition Chicken and to garner some long green for Bird & Beckett.
On April 27th, we’re extremely happy to be camping out for the evening on the block that features Bookshop West Portal (one of the best neighborhood bookshops in the City), The Music Store (one of the best little record stores around) and West Portal Books (a great online used book operation operating upstairs across the street, having once occupied a storefront space there). Twang promoter extraordinaire Shelby Ash, proprietor of The Music Store, has picked and booked our honky tonk band for the evening.
Want to plump up our account? Bring along a checkbook and shower more love on Bird & Beckett! We’ll put it to good use publishing chapbooks and presenting close to 300 events a year. We won’t waste it!
Help us raise $900 that evening to lay a Benjamin on each of nine musicians we’ve hired to entertain you! It’s the way we do it at Bird & Beckett!
(N.B, with the event having taken place, we can report that $1,140 was raised during the event hours on site–which miraculously exactly matched our $900 payout to the musicians, together with the poster production cost at CopyEdge on Ocean Avenue. Now we just need another $400 to cover what we paid our fabulous graphics designer, Misisipi Mike Wolf! Any takers? Any additional donations will be, as they say, all gravy and will be put to use for operating costs of the BBCLP. This is just the start of our spring fundraising campaign! Special thanks to all of you who put up $20 in cash at the event and the six who proffered donations ranging from four at $100 apiece, one for $200 and one for $500!)
Here’s to the West Portal neighborhood, replete with a library, a post office, and great cafes, bakeries, bars, markets, shops and services…and terrific restaurants — including Proposition Chicken. It’s all a hop, skip and a jump away from Stern Grove and San Francisco State University, not far from City College and just around the way from Glen Park, where we have our own sweet little setup on the crosstown trail, including a beautiful canyon, one of the few creeks in the City, and a hiking trail up to Twin Peaks, all lovingly tended by neighborhood volunteers and friends of humanity. A refuge and a wonderland in troubled times!
And here’s to Muni for its ability to get you there! From Glen Park, hop on the 23 and transfer to the K, L or M line on Sloat Blvd. at West Portal Avenue for a short ride (or a ten-minute walk) to the restaurant at the top of West Portal Avenue just shy of the subway station.
From downtown, take the K, L or M line and debark at West Portal Station. From the other ends of those lines, take the K or the M from Balboa Park Station (the M stops along the way at SF State on 19th Av.) or take the L from the Zoo out by the beach. The restaurant is just 100 yards down West Portal Avenue from the station on the west side of the street.
From the beach at Quintara Street, the 48 bus will take you to the West Portal Station. From the Mission District, the 48 will pick you up anywhere along 24th street and deliver you.
You owe it to yourself to make the trek to Proposition Chicken in West Portal any Monday in April, and especially April 27th at 6pm! It’ll be a big help to your little Glen Park bookshop and jazz joint! And it’ll be a good time!
We hope to see you there!
