Drummer Ron Vincent graduated from Berklee in Boston in 1973, toured for six years, then spent three years in Kansas City. Since 1982, he’s been ensconced in the New York jazz scene, including seven years in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and Mulligan’s Re-Birth of the Cool Tentet (a band that included trumpeter Wallace Roney, alto player Phil Woods, pianist John Lewis and vocalist Mel Torme). In recent years, Ron has become more bi-coastal, with a home back east and another just down the coast. Ron’s colleagues on his Bird & Beckett gig tonight are long established and talented professionals. Saxophonist Bruce Williamson left San Francisco for New York in the mid-1980s and has had a high level career in jazz all along the way. Brad Buethe had his New York chapter in the mid-1980s but then returned to San Francisco and is a major voice on guitar here. Both Bruce and Brad started their New York careers in Jack McDuff’s band. Noah Schencker is a Bay Area cat (his folks had the Print Mint on Telegraph Av in Berkeley from the 1960s to the 1980s, and his dad was the poet Don Schencker); Noah is one of those solid bass players that have always grounded the music, infusing it with life from the roots. This will be a solid quartet!
