Why do we call it a Deluxe Holiday? It’s a plush cushion of music you’ll enjoy at Bird & Beckett, and it’s also an acknowledgement with great admiration of the unique weekly jazz combo residencies of Mike Olmos (Mondays), Smith Dobson (Tuesdays) and Patrick Wolff (Wednesdays) that are a decade-long Club Deluxe tradition, transplanted to Bird & Beckett for the month of July!

Do call the Deluxe and tell them you want your favorite jazz dates back on their calendar now that we’re all getting a handle on how to live with the pandemic!

Along with Bird & Beckett, the Club Deluxe and Mr. Tipples are the go-to spots to find jazz in San Francisco any night of the week. Visit those fine establishments for a show soon, and remind them that we all count on them for that! They’re a big part of what makes San Francisco a jazz town, in keeping with a century of valued tradition — making the San Francisco Barbary Coast a destination in league with St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Pittsburgh & Philly, New Orleans and a handful of other crucibles of jazz!

Noir? Bix? Word.? The Jazz Mobile? Tell us about your favorite spots! Tourists are always asking, and so are the locals… especially spots where savvy audiences are really tuned in to the music and spots with an all-ages policy (like Bird & Beckett, Word. A Cafe in the Bayview and the Jazz Mobile in its many curbside spots around town!).

We particularly want to emphasize venues that prioritize the payment of fair wages to their musicians! Join Jazz in the Neighborhood to be part of that campaign!

If you’re a musician or promoter, join the Independent Musicians Alliance and the Musicians & Venues Development Alliance (inquire at [email protected]) to make your voice heard and build the solidarity it will take to forge a decent future for gigging musicians in the midst of rising temperatures and raging pandemics.

More jazz venues are what this town needs! Patronize them all, pay those cover charges and feed the tip jars when prompted! And implore your District Supervisor and Mayor Breed to help take some of the pressure off the venues by using your tax dollars to support a guaranteed fair wage for gigging musicians.

  • In re: our BYOB policy — Glen Park Station (the bar, not the BART station) is a good place to hang before and after the show and on the break, and has an off-sale liquor license. Fetch something there and bring it in if you like. Buddies Market at the corner of Chenery and Diamond is great but closes at 8! So don’t dally if that’s your planned stop! Really want to make us happy? Bring your own glass, too! Less plastic, mo’ betta! Speaking of plastic, cash is king at Bird & Beckett. Be advised!
