Drummer Tony Johnson leads the 230 Jones Street, Local 6, Literary Jazz Band at the happy hour show from 6-8pm on Friday the 25th, with Charlie McCarthy, saxophone; Glen Deardorff, guitar; Sam Cady, piano; and Chuck Bennett, bass. Jazz veterans going strong. In this photo, Tony and Glen are shown in a 2010 incarnation of the band that Chuck Peterson (at left) founded in 2002. With them is the singer Dorothy Lefkovits. In 2024, the band plays on!

Later Friday night, from 8:30-10pm, pianist and composer Brett Carson leads the Substandard Quartet, “a group that eschews the typical jazz standard in favor of the obscure and esoteric,” with Cory Wright, reeds; Safa Shokrai, bass; and Jason Levis, drums.

The Substandard’s repertoire includes music from B-movies, video games, stock music, punk rock, and contemporary classical music, all rendered with “virtuosity, quirk, and creative exuberance.” All four members are key contributors to the Bay Area’s fertile creative/free/improvised music community.

Saturday evening, from 7:30-9:30pm, guitarist Jinx Jones brings his jazz trio with Kenan O’Brien on bass and Ken Owen on drums. Jinx is a virtuoso in whatever genre he tackles, and the jazz trio format is one he’s been keenly developing for many years at Bird & Beckett and further afield.

Writing in Vintage Guitar magazine in 2018, writer Dan Forte noted that “Jinx Jones can indeed dazzle, Jones comps while launching melodic lines in a repertoire consisting of standards by Montgomery, Kessel, Lionel Hampton, and Benny Goodman, with his original ‘Alise’ lending a Latin mood. Most impressive is Jones’ arrangement of Miles Davis’ ‘So What,’ mixing percussive rhythm, single-note passages, and octaves in the modal masterpiece.”

Sunday from 5pm to 7pm, the Vince Lateano Trio hosts a jam session for seasoned and aspiring players alike. The session takes place on the last Sunday of each month and is always a pleasure. Ben Stolorow, piano; Peter Barshay, bass; and Vince Lateano, drums.

No charge to play in the jam, but we appreciate the audience contributing to the well earned wages due the trio for conducting the session.

Later Sunday evening, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, bassist Jayla Chee brings in a trio. Jayla left the Bay Area a few years ago to pursue her jazz education and career in New York, but returns from time to time to catch up with family and friends. On this trip, she’s accompanied by guitarist Emmauel Michael, a New York colleague. They’re joined on Jayla’s Bird & Beckett date by drummer Michael Mitchell, a Brooklyn native who made his move to Oakland a few years ago after a few Stanford Jazz Workshop forays, and is for good reason one of the most in-demand drummers on the local scene.
