But nothing beats being in the room with the music & the musicians!

Gaea Schell + John Wiitala Duo played Jazz in the Bookshop, Friday, March 20, 2020 – making for about 910 consecutive Fridays since October 2002!

Glen Park has never been without live jazz on a Friday night since the Chuck Peterson Trio got the ball rolling! This time, with Gaea Schell on piano and John Wiitala on bass, for the first time in the store’s 20-year history or presenting live jazz by the Bay Area’s fantastic musicians, we had no live audience due to a little thing going around, globally. But we streamed the performance out to the world and people all over creation got a great show. You can see and hear the evidence at this link: Gaea Schell & John Wiitala Duo Live at Bird & Beckett, 3/20/20 Folks tuned in from the neighborhood, all around the Bay Area, down in Ventura, over in Australia… and donated generously online through the website. Enough that we were able to pay $200 to each of the musicians for their fine artistry and generous spirit. And…

Ami Molinelli, co-leader of the Brazilian choro & jazz ensemble, Grupo Falsa Baiano, is a professional percussionist and educator specializing in Brazilian and Latin percussion, especially the pandeiro. Molinelli received her Master of Fine Arts from California Institute of the Arts and has studied at Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. Failure to Appear: Resistance, Identity and Loss, A Memoir
Emily L. Quint Freeman

Call us if you want to be notified when a new date is set. In 1969, Emily Freeman, then Linda J. Quint, engaged in an act of conscience with seventeen others, burning thousands of draft records on the Southside of Chicago to keep poor and minority men from being drafted into the Vietnam War, an action that the Catholic priests, Dan and Phil Berrigan, had taken one year earlier. She stood trial and was to be sent to prison for 10 years followed by 10 years probation. She fled and lived underground for 19 years. She had also come out as a lesbian to her parents while a student at UC Berkeley, and had already lost their financial and emotional support. Failure to Appear is Emily L. SUPPORT BIRD & BECKETT - DONATE TODAY!

Your donation to the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project helps us pay for a multitude of operating expenses necessary to present, promote and preserve local music, poetry, and more.

Help us keep the arts alive and thriving!

The Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project was created in 2007 "to present, document and archive the creative work of significant living writers and musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area, for a neighborhood audience and future generations." We've been doing that very thing for more than a decade and a half, continuing the work we began when the store was established in 1999.

Due to lapses in tax filings during and post-pandemic, the BBCLP's status as a registered nonprofit was suspended at the beginning of April 2024 while we reapply, which is expected to take about six months. Donations made after April 1st will not be tax-deductible until nonprofit status is restored.

However, we continue to present a full slate of programming live music and poetry, and producing literary chapbooks, and we seek and welcome your continued financial support in the interim. If a tax-deduction is not a major reason for your support to date, we hope you'll continue to ride with us while we navigate these next several months.
