The Live Music Just Won’t Stop!

Miss your evenings in the bookshop listening to live music?

Live Streaming Friday, Saturday & Sunday

right in your living room, but more than six feet away!

The live streams from Bird & Beckett all started with Friday the 13th, when the towering saxophonist Michael Zilber brought his trio (Jason Lewis on drums and Tyler Harlow on bass) into the shop in the face of the exploding novel coronavirus crisis. Angela Bennett pioneered our broadcasting foray with these two tunes that ended the trio’s first set – Duke Ellington’s lovely “Sophisticated Lady” and a burning take on Cedar Walton’s “Bolivia”

Mounting fears forced the cancellation of Saturday night’s jazz club show, and then on Sunday Rebecca Kleinman on flutes and vocals was joined by guitarist Julio Lemos for two sets of Brazilian duets. By the next weekend, the Bay Area shelter-in-place edicts came down, and shows began to proceed with no in-store audience.

"It is in doubt and not in faith that the salvation of the world is to be found. Faith is a delusion and a snare: a pitfall, a prison. It intimidates the intellect. With fear of eternal damnation religion crushes intellectual activity; with hero worship it destroys individuality; with hopes for the beyond it prevents the growth of ideals for the present. It makes of us a race of intellectual cowards; it changes but little if any our daily conduct toward each other. But doubt sets us free."

-- Job Harriman, 1902
