Times Three has been a unit since the late 1990s, releasing their debut, eponymous cd in 2006 and a second cd, entitled “Off the Grid” in 2014. Their long association has allowed them to develop a high level of group chemistry and musical interaction, and has also allowed them to cultivate their love for lesser-known jazz compositions and non-standard time signatures. They dig deep into unusual arrangements of some of the greatest jazz compositions you’ve never heard!
Pianist Paul Mindrup is the group’s most recent arrival in San Francisco (some 25 years ago). Born in Dallas, he began classical piano studies at the age of 6, but defected to jazz shortly thereafter. Paul can also be heard on the Michael Gold album, Personal Standards.
Bassist and composer Scott Chapek has performed in the San Francisco music scene since he moved from Chicago in the late 1980’s. He has been a mainstay of the Saturday night piano trio at Bix Restaurant for more than 10 years. He can also be found playing jazz duo at Harris’ Steakhouse on Wednesdays and Sundays. Scott has played with many well-respected musicians, including Donald Bailey, Mad & Eddie Duran, Johnny Frigo, Ed Kelly, Calvin Keys, Kim Nalley, Si Perkoff, Mary Stallings, Hal Stein, and Vince Wallace.
Drummer Tom Hassett has been an active member of the Bay Area jazz community for over twenty-five years. Study with master drummer Jerry Granelli in the ’70s left him largely (and happily) unfit for most commercial work, and so he remains today. In recent years he worked with the Susan Chen Trio at Harris’ restaurant from 1998 – 2000, and appears on their CD Harris’ Nights. He has appeared on six albums by The Lost Trio (available on Evander Music), as well as singer Jenny Ferris’ 2006 album Day In Day Out and vibraphonist Ted Wolff’s 2012 album Wish List.
